Just sat wondering on a project and was wondering what the difficulties would be to IVA a frame buggy, myself i cant see the problem as apposed to aself build car like a Locost. Still the same, self build frame, and a donor car/cars, depend son if you want to keep the Reg.

Is there anything i am missing here?

wolly Very Happy

Reg keeping is out as far as I can see Very Happy

Simple enough to do, round edges no sharper than a prescribed radius, lights here, wheels covered there. Same as anything, same as CE marking or even ATEX, just follow the rules and get the tests done Cool

Maybe ATEX isn't quite the explosive analogy, but it's the same 'find the rules', 'apply the rules' and sign off. Except with the car you might kill yourself and with ATEX you'll probably kill someone else, in a ball of flame, but bad karma either way if you get it wrong. Part of the tube-kit-car cost is the paperwork and testing proof side.

As been said above it can be done keeping the original donor reg might be a bit hard unless you can prove you have used as much as 80% of the donor or have a brand new reg if you buy all brand new parts and keep detailed accounts and reciepts ( every nut and bolt and all) you might be better downloading a iva rule book as its very detailed on every little detail

You should be able to find the IVA manual on-line.

this is the deciding "code" i think, when they decide whether it needs an IVA or not.

each of the major components are assigned point values, which get totalled up if you change something (i think the engine and gearbox is 1 point for example) basically allowing you to change a certian number of things before you legally require an IVA

there are certian exceptions however,

http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/vosalaw.htm this is a good little read if you're interested

Replacing a like for like chassis purchased new or even a very like for like DIY built chassis,
with proof of purchase or proof of build,
and building a totally different type of chassis or Frame Chassis, different construction, material, wheelbase etc is rather different.

Taking a previously used chassis that was registered in the UK, and is now radically modified, and giving it the identity of another vehicle, then requires the actions that the DVLA set out you are required to follow.
