My 1.6 has done around 105k now (96 in a vit the rest in my sj) its had 2 headgaskets done, gets abused offroad and still going strong, as long as it's been looked after it should be fine

not really, if you are careful.. engines are cheap as chips as well and with the exception of the difference between 16 and 8valve, pretty much everything from the same "type" is bolt on between the few variations (ie 8valve carb, 8valve injection, etc etc)

As said engines are cheap for them if it did go bang.

The head gaskets suffer more on off-roaders because the radiators get clogged. The 16V engine can crack its block when overheated but the 8V is fairly robust.
