1999 Land Rover Defender

Would have put this in the Landrover Section but, love or hate them, this is a rather well written and poignant article on the demise of the Defender. Worth following the links down the RHS of the page as well for some other articles too, especially this one:

In a world of connected, hybrid cars in whatever shape or size you want them, the Defender just no longer fits.

No hybrid car is going to replace a vehicle such as the Defender - A defender is a utility vehicle neither the disco or range rover is a ute - will Landrover be introducing a single or double cab pick up, I don't think so.

The humble farmer is going to be buying Japanese in the future, whether it be Mitsubishi, Toyota or Ford to get a vehicle that they chuck a bale of hay in and trundle out over their fields in and then bring back a couple of sheep or a new born calf - you don't do that kind of thing in a range rover let alone a prius Rolling Eyes

Though you will find precisely nothing in common between a Defender and Range Rover, there would never have been the latter without the former

Aye - the market was initially created, and then expanded as companies came up with newer ideas and so they all responded to each other.

I'm rather glad they all did.

nightbar thanks for forwarding those links. Lovely articles.

But...wasn't the Defender going to be replaced by the DC100 in 2013?

The end of the Defender? I believe it when I see it ...!

On the other hand....

Land rover need to look at what jeep have done with the wrangler

Yes it's a leisure vehicle but I could be a workhorse too with little effort

The defender should have been replaced 20years ago!

Yes, but it has continued to sell well in that time with really only a few minor upgrades and they were mostly to comply with changes in the regulations.

Quite a lot of people like them - you pays your money and takes your choice! If it turns you on !!!

The question is; how much money is there to be made from a simple utility workhorse in what is already an extremely competitive market? Land Rover make their money now from top end cars - Range Rover, Discovery, Freelander and Evoque. These cars are outselling the nearest competition so there is no real incentive for them to redesign the Defender and do battle in an intensive market. Sad but true.

I'd love a defender as my next car, but they just haven't moved on with the world my 20 year old 70series land cruiser is basically the same truck but better than what land rover offer today.

I think it will be a discovery comercial for me soon, if you look there are an awful lot of them out there- more expensive than a defender but much more user friendly....

Toyota are talking about stopping production of the 70 series to Sad it would be nice if they changed there mind and started selling them in Europe if the defender is canned.

I wonder if Tata will manufacture a Defender based vehicle in India for use in non-EU/USA markets where the regulations are far less demanding. A cheap utility vehicle will probably sell well in Asia/Africa.

LR are building the Wolf Defenders until 2030. And organizations that want Defenders will be able to get them for a good few years yet.

What is known as ROW?

If it wasn't for the GPW there wouldn't have been a Defender, if it wasn't for Marcus Seigfreid there wouldn't have been Daimler or Benz .....

There are better vehicles than the Defender that is certain, however there isn't one that measures up in that indefinable way that marks out an iconic design classic. The Beetle was a slow nasty noisy clattery bucket but I loved it and has 3 or 4 of them. The VW bus was massively underpowered and impossible to work on unless you were Mr Tickle but I loved it as well. The Mini was a pokey little rollerskate that was useless as a family car and so on. To measure the worth of an iconic car by comparison to others available at the time is missing the point, IMO.

The articles are well written but ignore that huge developments from teh original SWB to the modern 110s. The puma engined Landies will NOT last as long as the old one because the cost of repairing/replacing the electronic doodads will be prohibitive. My 2.4 110 broke the ABS module and it was replaced under warranty, retail cost £3,700. Who would pay that for a 20 year old car? Earlier examples will last almost forever because the biggest item that needs changing is the chassis and a galvo one will last 30 years or more.

My real question is what do I get after this one? Probably fit a galvo chassis and ford ranger engine/auto box or buy an electric wheelchair!

Everybody seems to be missing a point here. JLR are saying they will cease production of the Defender because it won't meet emissions regulations.

UTTER BALDERDASH!

Emissions have nothing whatsoever to do with the chassic/body/suspension etc. They are down to the engine management, engine, exhaust and emission control systems. If JLR had the desire they could easily make the Defender drivetrains meet emissions legislation. The question is ..... why don't they want to?

To be honest I always thought it was crash test and pedestrian safety tests where the Defender failed...

Now european safety legislation is a vague thing. It's largely to do with not having pointy and stabby things an occupant can bounce off. Bar safety belts and integrated child seat fixings not much is actually written down in blood. Basically if it can pass an SVA/IVA it's fine.

Actually its mostly to do with pedestrian impact rather than driver safety.

There are many reasons why a vehicle manufacturer will cease production of a low volume model.

Lets be honest, after 60 years the Defender needs a full update. I bought mine last year in anticipation of the DC100 coming out in 3 or 4 years. I love the idea of a Disco/RRsport/Evoque platform vehicle with the Defender's basic practicality. I wasn't totally sold on the looks but plastic wings/doors, lighter, faster, better fuel economy and greater choice of modern driving aids (gadgets) was exactly what I was wanting.

The Defender will continue to be made in ROW spec and military and don;t forget that VW brought back the Beetle (runs and hide from the flaming)
