I have a 1998 Mercedes Sprinter and would find a difflock handy for getting in and out of wet fields at festivals.
There is a 4x4 version, if I were to get the rear diff from a scrapped one would it be a relatively easy swap in? Alternatively, is swapping the whole rear axle a better solution?
Or am I mad?
What are your thoughts?

Yes it sounds do-able.
Depends on what type of locker it is. Might require the half shafts as well. Might be better to go for the full axle.
If its an air operated one it should be easy to wire in.
Bear in mind the diff ratio might be different.
Are you sure the 4x4 version even has a REAR diff locker?
