What are people's recommendations for land rover defender main and aux/leisure batteries? I know one 4x4 dealer who will no longer sell odyssey 1500s as so many they have sold have failed, and I am hearing mixed reports about Optima.
I need to replace both my batteries and would appreciate the latest thinking for a cost-effective solution!

I replaced my main battery with a bog standard heavy duty one as recommended by my local motor factor - its done the job. No point in mentioning the name as I can't find them anymore (quick google search) but it has done what it was supposed to do within the AmpH spec I asked for. That was 7 years ago.
Auxilliary battery is another kettle of fish. I suppose it depends on what it is used for and the size it has to be to fit in the battery box/space available. I went with an Aurora soely because it fitted under the seat box in the 90. As to how good it is - it's only done one season running the fridge (for 15 days solid) and charging phones whilst away.
(I did blow the fuses on the charging circuit when I started the car after 5 days but that was probably because the charge was so low in the aux that the current drain was rather large. Prob sorted with larger fuses and remembering to wire plug in the trickle solar charger.)

I've got two Banner-Batteries traction batteries, both glass fibre filled & gel. Theory is that it does the high current and can be run right down on charge.
If your not going to roll the truck, then gel is maybe over the top? But the Diode-split-charge is very good if you are going to have vastly different charges in the system. There's no back feed from one to the other.
The Team Idris van has a normal lead acid for engine and a standard caravan deep cycle right at the back through 20ft of cable, with a relay split charge that cuts in with voltage.
I guess I cover both extremes there

Good point - my main is the aurora (the cheapo from the local factor years ago) and my aux is an actually a DC range alphaline from batterymegastore.co.uk. I scibbled down the details the wrong way round as I wasn't paying attention/rushing.
Sorry for any confusion.
