Hello all. My name is Tim and I am a newbie to Lada and 4wd although I have had the pleasure of tanking around in an old landrover.
I live in Israel and have discovered that all motorised vehicles here are eyewateringly expensive in comparison to the UK.
The exception is Lada which are about the same. I have been doing some research into the Niva of which there are 1.6 and 1.7 here, I have not seen any Diesel but I know they exist in Northern Europe.
I am happy to tinker and fabricate as I have done this before. (aircooled VW)
I am principally looking to improve the fuel consumption, power is not so important. I will probably be towing not too heavy trailers and some dirt roads. No serious 4wd.
Some questions. My apologies if they have been done before.
There seems to be two diesel engines mainly used for conversions.
The PUG and the Fiat.
Which is the easiest diesel engine to put in with least amount of hassle?
Is a turbo necessary?
Which engine is used in the Lada diesel?
I realise that this has been asked before but cannot find any definitive, and perhaps there isn't one?, answer to which diesel to use if I want to change
the engine.
I will be starting with a 1.7 lhd, unless I can find a diesel.
Thanks Tim.

1997 Lada Niva

Hi there,
The factory lada diesel used a peugeot xud unit, 1.9 none turbo diesel. You "may" be able to find a factory kit on a european ebay (the UK never got the diesels) to fit the unit into your niva.
The peugeot engine leans to the side in factpry form which would bring a turbo into contact with the steering box on a right hand drive vehicle but as you will be LHD this shouldn't be a problem.
There are plenty of threads on the net of how to make an adapter plate for the conversion but no drawings of the specific plate you will end up with. It's easier to make them using the components that you are using rather than draw it all first.
Another alternative that would be open to you as you are LHD and would be able to cope with the engine leaning over, is using an LDV pilot gearbox and clutch/flywheel. This all bolts together and would just require mounts and a sump making. Also the connection between the ldv box and the niva transfer box would need sorting.
"therealnivaman" on the lada uk forum (google it, we arent allowed to post links to competitors here) has fitted a 1.7 fiat diesel engine minus the turbo at the moment and says it all bolts together nicely with only sump mods etc.
I personally would want a turbo, especially if towing anything whether light or heavy, nivas aren't good at motorway speeds and if you are putting all the effrt into an upgrade you would want to upgrade evrything you could for the same effort.
