I has a mirror swiped off the car a few days ago dam busses !! anyhow the company are paying & I called the jeep rip off suppies. they wanted (get this ) £273 + vat for a mirror Laughing Laughing Laughing don't know what they smoke , but by fek . If ya wanna put some one off buying a car, go to a dealer..
Any how, I had a look about & though hmmmmmmmmmmm scappers , I know the buss company is paying but, I wont entertain idiots & wont encourage them ( the dealers) so I had a call around, not a mirror any where !!
I then had a chat to a bud in the states, "yeh cool " he says leave it with me, he called me back " $52 + $20 shipping to uk , is that ok " he said with a worried voice.

Laughing Laughing Razz yeh of course, book me in.
so there ya go approx. £50 to uk new , the scrap yards wanted £90 !! Laughing Laughing

Judderman how cheap are Jeep parts in the US? I am heading over on holiday next year and was wondering if its worth waiting and buying some leaf springs over there and shipping them over here

Didn't say which Jeep, but Ebay is often good for stuff like this.

I'd say about 40% less than UK prices from what I have seen so far...

Be careful - I play this game every day of my life and get so frustrated by how much it looks like you might save but can't!

40% cheaper on the parts is great!
Watch out for very poor exchange rates on international credit/debit card transactions - knock about 5 cents off the published exchange rates.

Then add the shipping costs.

Then add import duty ( 5-9% on most things for a car )

Then add 20% vat to the total amount including the import duty and the shipping and you get to what it really costs to bring stuff over.

Sometimes there still is a good saving and sometimes you get away without Customs ( as an individual anyway ) but then rememeberf you willstruggle with any warranty claim you might have in the future etc.

Personal import can work well but apart from the one you might get away with you will not save anywhere near as much as you might think!!

David

Earlier in the year I was off to Las Vegas and needed a window mechanism.

I priced up what I could buy it for over there - and then bought it from Taiwan as was cheaper and did not need to carry it.

Totally agree with you Dave, I had a rough country kit imported from you a while back because I couldn't work out a way to do it cheaper/easier myself so I definitely understand... but for personal import etc you can still make some pretty hefty savings especially if you can fit it in your case Wink

I generally use Quadratec in the US and get it shipped over. Last time I bought a load of stuff (~$2,000) which weighed a ton! /there were 7 big boxes in a all. Shipping and tax was very reasonable and I saved a fortune by not getting a shop to order it in. Saying that getting anything done on a vehicle over here is extortionate!

Go direct to the part supplier in the states, there are lots of oem parts & pattern, for jeep Cherokee/liberty etc.
The postage to the uk, is far better from them than a pass on to a bud, who will mail it on to you.
I recently had some coil springs sent $44 parts , free shipping to buddy, $60 a set shipping from him.
I was quoted $90 for the full set (2 parcels from bud $60 each) 1 parcel from store $90 !

the number of times I have heard this is almost as many as the times I have the I wish I had bought it through a UK dealer!!!
Some items can be sent cheaply especially if through a friend but I can normally sell stuff here cheaper than you can get it yourself!
You only need to have a parcel picked up on by Customs and if you have not declared the correct value then they will tax you ( import and vat ) on their estimated value which I can assure you will be over the market value.

Small items maybe but a lift kit? I will sell it cheaper with all duties declared and paid properly than you will get one shipped over for yourself.

I have tried it several times and once people understand how the import / shipping / duty / vat thing works out it is simply not cheaper to do it yourself unless you try the 'gift' idea to bypass the duties. Problem with that is Customs are not stupid and they are desperate for income!! Why would a US company be sending you a lift kjit as a gift?? Won't work.

I have even had to prove that items shipped as warranty ( duty free ) were actual replacements! I had to prove I had imported the parts before.

David

other thing I've seen done is get them to sell it you on ebay - include invoice in packaging which sets winning price

all there is to pay is a little ebay fees extra

Also look at ship and shop (google it). They bring stuff over when it's quiet so it's cheaper.
