I want to mount my spare on the bonnet and wondered if people could recommend a kit and offer any advice about fitting. I've found the below so far

http://www.johncraddockltd.co.uk/land-rover-par...0tdi-and-td5.html

and

http://www.paddockspares.com/pm1131-defender-bo...-wheels-only.html

Any others I should consider? I've heard good things about an MOD kit that used to be available?

I'm on 235 85R16 at the moment on 5.5" steels so the paddock one looks like it'll force me to stay on those which isn't ideal as i'd like to get some wider rims in the future. I'm waiting on craddocks about what widths the front runner part supports.

Also wondered if people have gone to any lengths to re-enforce the bonnet as i've heard stories of bonnets caving in with spares on them...

Cheers,
Ian

PS i'm aware i'll need a stiffer bonnet release spring and the various drawbacks to a bonnet mount spare.

I would go with the paddocks kit, it's the same as the genuine LR parts,

Hopefully Im attaching some pictures of the MOD bonnet mount on my 1985 90 - straight from Army no mods - if you compare this to yours you can see the difference? Ive been running it like this for four years firstly with Michelin XCLs and then Goodyear G90 - both 7.50 x 16 - lots of off road and logging work no problems with distortion or cracking. - couple of things though 1) everyone who drives it hates the lack of visibility off road (7.50 x 16 with a hard cover) I personally dont notice it at all! 2) the military bonnet has a big straight rigid prop and it is heavy to lift up - dont know if id trust a folding prop? and 3) there is a picture of a Goodyear G90 which was on my bonnet 3 years with a cover - I put it on last MOT and within 1000 miles it has cracked so badly it is scrap - full tread and scrap! Im gutted! apparently this is due to being stored that side up on the bonnet even with a cover!!

Thanks for all the comments and the pictures. I think I'll try to get the MoD one.

Cheers

Thought I'd give a bit of belated feedback after getting this sorted. I got an MoD one from blanchard's in the end (think it was ~£120). Not sure if it is genuine MoD but it does the trick. If it's a copy it does look similar to the pics turnip posted but the weld on the join between the pillars and base plate doesn't look as neat as his or the other MoD land rovers that blanchard's have. Also blanchard's have the solid prop which is loads better than the sketchy hinged one.

Cone drill set from screwfix provided a cheap way to make neat holes of varying sizes. Spare rivets were useful as my riveting skills are not exercised that regularly.

Had a bit of a problem with the mount initially as one of the prongs had bent so retaining cage didn't slide down, but in blanchards defence they sent me a replacement in the post next day and I returned the duff one. Also one of the rubber wheel rests split pretty much immediately but again that was replaced without quibble so happy enough. hasn't fallen off yet so think everythings ok. In hindsight I'm now tempted by the £50 price tag of the paddocks but I can't comment on it
