Firstly I apologize in advance for my noob question as its for my friends Jeep and I know very little about them. He has a Wrangler the same as this one.
http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/cartestreports/2006065.html
He has bought some Mickey Thompsons at 385/70R16.
He has already gone to a lot of trouble converting his to the Jap 6 stud PCD and now he says he needs to put a suspension lift on which he didn't think he needed to.
He seems to think he needs a 6" lift but I think he must have worked something out wrong as that seems a bit excessive for wheels that are a maximum of 2" bigger than the standard wheels.
What will he require for these wheels to fit?

A 385/70X16 IS ABOUT A 37" TYRE. Standard were only about 30"!!
33's will require a 4" lift to fit properly so 6" is about right. If I was him though I would only go 4" suspension and make up the rest with body lift. Even at 4" suspension you are looking at a big lift with implications..
If he is going all 6 on the suspension then he really will want a longarm which is great but another £1000 on top!
Get him ( or you ) to give me a call and I can happily advise on all the options available to get what size tyre under a TJ

Huge amounts of work - new tyres 15" wide and 37" high - when it would be happy on 31x10.5" standard

32" tyres will just go under a 2.5" lift.
If they are that wide you will want some extended fenders to cover them
I can sort out both if you need them but do you really want tyres that wide?

That seems more reasonable. They are for a friend; yes he does, he fell in love with them. at £250 a pop they are not exactly cheap. I will suggest the rubber vinyl stuff that can be used.

Don't bother bodging some bits of rubber strip onto the existing fenders - a set of wide fenders that bolt straight on and look nice are less than the cost of 1 tryre with a load of change left !!

I have 33's with a 4" lift on my TJ and the ride is...... OK....ish! It's a bit nasty on really rough ground, although this isn't helped by having Recaro's with zero give in em. Most of the time I end up letting the tyres down to compensate. If he is lifting 4" he will also probably need a slip yoke eliminator to correct the shaft angle. TBH a long arm lift would be the way to go on anything over 3" if you still want a reasonably comfortable ride.
Saying that mine aren't 15" wide. I'd say they are a good 12" tho. But they are the BFG AT's so have a v stiff sidewall which again doesn't help.
With regards to the regear it all depends on what he is running at the moment. I have a 4.0L which originally had 3.07's in the diffs. This was OK and I did use it for 2 years before I upgraded to 4.88's. Saying that you do lose 5th gear as you end up always being not quite in the power band. This leads to lots of gear changes even on the flat. Hills would be a nightmare. Also you end up in 4 low & 3rd gear when offroad instead of 4 high.
I can't comment if he has the 2.5L but would have thought it would be much worse.

Also, mine has quite a lot of engine mods which probably free up quite a few ponies which again will help with the bigger tyres and diff ratios.

So I have been down to see him today and spoke to him in person and got a better explanation. He bought wide arches but they are sat on the tyres. Here are the mad wheels in question.

Woah! Now that's a set of tyres!
It will certainly have road presence but I would imagine any off road ability will be compromised, unless he's planning on going to Iceland.

He doesn't do much of that anymore. They are more for being a road hoon. He had a bit of a crisis when he found them.

The steering clears. The issue is with the wide arches as they hang lower than the body arches. He doesn't want to go so high so really its 2" or so and some kind of workaround.

Ha ha, they're awesome! I want some!
They'd be awesome in the sand. At 12psi they must be ...... 1 1/2 foot wide!
I bet it drives like a pig tho. IN the wet that'd be horrendous! TJ breaks aren't the best at the best of times but with those puppies....ooft!
