You say the wiring loom was drenched with oil. have to checked the plug at the ECM?
The oil can work its way down the loom to the ECM eventuly getting in to that as well.
You may get lucky and a clean out the connections. Sometimes works otherwise it may be shopping time.
On the other side you say the fuel pump is silent. another comman issue for this is the fuel pump relay failing. Not sure where its hidden in DII but IIRC its in the main fuse box. (Defender has it on baulkhead No1 under drivers seat) If a new relay dosn't fix it then its back to the ECM not telling it to start which might mean oil inn the ECM or loom plug.
Pumps as a rule don't die that often, but the fact you have had an oil filled wiring loom id look at your connectors and relay first, if you lucky it'll be just a £5 relay or short section of wiring loom.

if im honest you would be better of removing the engine loom & replacing it, if your stuck, i have one on the shelf,
id be looking at the simple things, as a thought have you reset the crash switch thats on the bulkhead? that stops the fuel pump running, as above check fuses & relays,
what warning lights do you have coming up on the dash?
also something thats worth a try is turn the ign to pos2 & then pump the throttle pedal 5 times back to back, this forces the ecu to power the fuel pump

you may well think so but theres thousands of Vw's with the loom in the same place without issue..........
the issue being the plugs they used
