So, I can't sleep and ended up on one of those random youtube video adventures and after two hours of cats, dogs, mud trucks, ducklings, stupid American teenagers trying to "drift" various front wheel drive cars (usually ending with the cars parked in a sign or bush) and one random moose with her calf playing in a garden with a sprinkler, this absolute gem popped up in the recommended videos!

I forgot just how good F1 used to be! I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I have.

HHmmmm... The embed thing seems to not be working for me right now, here's the link.....

Now that s a gem of a piece of film! Thanks.

Love the 10 minutes of racing after the pitstop at minute 50ish.

To be honest, unless F1 goes back to the racing of the 80s and before it will never be any more interesting than watching paint dry Rolling Eyes

Not rumour - From 2014 new Formula One engine regulations will be introduced, replacing the current 2.4 litre V8s with more efficient 1.6 litre, turbocharged V6s.

I am a bit disappointed with the new engine regs. There were two options on the table for the new engine types, the 1.6 v6 turbo and 1.6 inline 4 turbo. I would have much rather they went for the 4 cyl option as it could potentially have made more engine options available from different manufacturers (I read somewhere that Renault had been testing one of their production 1.6 inline 4 blocks in preparation for the new rules and they were able to get the engine to produce well over 900 BHP reliably!). I think it would have had more relevance to engines we have in our day to day cars.

Unfortunately, because Ferrari wanted a "V" configuration (either v6 or v8 ) so they could use the engine as part of the chassis, that is what we are going to get! If they had went to 4 cyl, the teams would have had to make a few changes to their design practises because apparently, they can't use an inline block as part of the chassis meaning there would have been a spaceframe at the rear for all the suspension gubbins to hang from!

As for the current on track issues with the racing (or lack of) I had a few ideas about that...

The reason there is DRS is because of the way that the aerodynamics over the top of the cars and their wings are affected when they are close to each other which leads the car behind to loose grip. I personally think that they should allow for a percentage of the cars downforce to be generated by ground effect as this isn't affected by other cars and turbulent air (this is a bit overkill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZkUr5cG6wE but it worked). Not all of the downforce should be created this way because if you hit a kerb, you loose all downforce and are just heading to the scene of a major accident then! I reckon this in itself would help get racing back to the exciting 4 or 5 corner side by side real overtakes as the cars would be able to get into the dirty air of the car in front. Anything has to be better than the dull as dishwater straightline DRS "action" we have now!

Anyway, I have waffled on long enough and the dog is giving me the "get off your bum and take me out to play" look! I would like to hear what you guys think could help F1 get some excitement back.

Cheers, John

Back in the day BMW had well over 1000bhp from their units... and that was a block with over 100000 miles on it that was found out the back of the workshop when BMW entered it to race..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=Enie-nlVZaw&feature=endscreen - youtube not work on this site - sorry.

Prost, Senna, Mansel, Lauda, Arnoux, Warwick, Patrisse, Alberto and Rosberg.

Michelin and Goodyear tyres.

Murray Walker and James Hunt Commentary (despite their lose of pictures they carried on on radio on and raw lap times).

F1 at its best.

Racing to the end. Almost!

Did any of you watch the recent BBC2 series, Motor Racing at the BBC: That petrol Emotion?

Some good F1 coverage in that.
