You shouldn't have to remove the big bolt in the middle, if you do then be aware that it needs to be tightened to 96ft/lbs. If it isn't properly tightened then the crank keyway can get wrecked.

to be honest its my first cambelt change, i read up on it and tried getting it off with the 6 pulley bolts but there was so much corrosion after lots of whacking with a brass hammer it wasnt budging at all, ive got a nice torq wrench somewhere in the depth of the shed ill need to dig out

any other tips for putting the new belt on

Not sure if torque wrenchs are designed for undoing tight nuts / bolts. Mine certainly say not for undoing nuts/bolts.

some more progress and a bit of trouble as well
new filters here
[img][/img]

painted the strut brace
[img][/img]

i filled the void here with some fibreglass, there used to be steel top hats

[img][/img]
[img][/img]
[img][/img]
[img][/img]

[img][/img]

and now the bad bit, i decided to give the sump a brush and paint, in the process this started
[img][/img]

so it looks like theres a hole now, so that sump is going to need removed and repaired
also, after connecting the battery, ive got no power at all on turning the ignition key, no lights, nothing, but headlights and cab lights are fine, any ideas???????????

Recycler I've been amazed at many neglected wrecks that car enthusiasts all round the world have bought back from not much more than a rusty chassis. All those hand made replacement bits of steel, the genius and persistence on what I would have thought was a wasted cause. But man I've gotta say (with respect), I seriously wonder if all this effort you're putting in is worthwhile. What the hell has this poor car been through already? The rust & corrosion in just about every panel and structural part have me cringing at your pics. Part of me admires you - part of me laughs in disbelief. I love you for trying to bring the old girl back from the dead - but at what point do we say... "Sadly I think it's time to give this a decent burial."
Now don't be put off by what I've said or feel cricitised. That's not where I'm comin' from. Press on if you must and make an offroad or car show winner or just a beast you just like treating harshly for your own amusement. I'll continue to follow this build with awe. Silenced

Well said, and i have to aggree with you, if this were a dailly drive it wouldnt still be here
as it is its my wee toy, it sits on the driveway most of the time bieng driven meybe twice a week, and can sit unused for a week or two, last year it covered under 3000miles, and the year before i think 3500miles, i dont realy need it to be honest ive a complany car, this gets used on odd weekends, going fishing mountian biking and sometimes in the mud, i dont need it to be perfect or good looking, just to be ready when i want it
for the past year ive been eying up some nice shiny cars but in my minds eys its a waste paying monthly for a new motor to depreciate on the drive and get used as little as this does
but yea she is past it but i get a kind of satisfaction and as long as its safe and solid im happy

and the wife cant moan about the dog hair or kids sweetie wrappers on the floor

To many cars that are past it get binned, in a few more years these old cars will be classic and sort after and with out people like this they will be gone.

The times have moved on the 4x4 scene has become more modern but for some it's to expensive to buy new for a joy, so old and fix is the way to go.... I still have my first sj that I bought nine years ago i parked it up 4 years ago and iit's not been touched since to much other stuff got in the way. Plans are being made to get the thing sorted though and after to long from behind the wheel I can't wait

I have had success in the past with chemical metal and sump repairs

Basically drain the oil out and remove the outer paint with a grinder blast the hole area with brake and clutch cleaner then fill with the chemical refill and check

I bust a works van sump a couple of years back getting down an un made track to make a delivery I repaired it with the above fix as a temporary thing and it's still going strong no new sump needed or any further repairing
