Just wandering which 4x4 WILL run on veg oil and diesel mix since keep getting conflicting information when I look. Since I'm interested in either a Terrano 2.7Tdi or a Fronter 2.2 Dti

Is there a list of cars that do?

Yes there is a list on the interweb somewhere, its not a comprehensive list but one compiled from people who have actually run their vehicles on veg. Also gives the mileage theyve covered on veg and problems they have encountered mechanically wise.

Maverano's will run on 50/50 veg/derv mix, at least mine does and has done for a couple of years with no ill effect. They dont like more than 50/50.
You are well advised to put in a primary filter, i have a glass bowl type before the main filter which the bowl just unclips and the filter gauze can be cleaned on the side of the road.

You will need to change the main fuel filter a few times after you start running on veg, as any muck in the bottom of the fuel tank tends to stick to the veg and get dragged through.

I have also modded the fuel lines from main filter to pump by running them up and down the rocker cover and cable tied them to the heater pipes, to help heat up the fuel, (makes it thinner) I have also installed a glow plug type fuel heater before the main filter and a 12v baby bottle warmer strapped around the main fuel filter helps as well.

The 2.5 & 2.8 Mitsubishi units can run a high ratio. Most will run at 50/50 as long as you are a few degrees above freezing during the night.

The only list of cars you can run on veg oil I found was a US one with no UK cars on it which wasn't much help.

generally as a rule of thumb I understand diesel engines built before 2003, i.e pre PD can be capable, but then some like it, some don't. i certainly wouldn't feed Veg to a newer motor or a common rail diesel. its best to try with a mix of derv/svo and slowly increase the %age of svo. there was a list and a log compiled somewhere and I'll see if I can find it

Reputations are about various and many different vehicles.

You only want to buy one, so buy one thats not rusty.
That applies to each and every type of vehicles.

Even different models of vehicle without a reputation for rust, does not mean that you will not find ones that are rusty.

Unmodified? Your mileage may vary.

You need either a Bosch or SIMMS Inline or a Bosch or Nippon Rotary type IP or similar.

Common Rail, Lucas Pumps or Standyne rotaries etc are not suitable.

A direct injection diesel is not suitable for cold starting on Vegetable oils.

An indirect injection engine will generally survive, just.

Does it have to be a 4x4?

Old Merc Diesel estates and Saloons are perfect (IE ones from the 1980's)
Get the right diesel and it'll be IDI with a Bosch inline pump - Veggie heaven!

Having discussed this at length, and in his absence, I will give Ged's default response: SsangYong 2.9 diesel, either Musso or Korando. The n/a diesel apparently runs 100%, early turbos the same.

Do they not use the old Merc engine as previously mentioned by Nathanial?

That they do, not something that comes to mind straight away though for most people. A bit more recent than 1980s though.

I am running 95%WVO 5% petrol in my 2.8TD Shoggy, with a wee dram of veggiboost, runs a dream, i have done over 3000 miles. yes it only does 24ish to the gallon but nicely Very Happy
In winter i was 50/50 but i am going to go with 90%WVO and 10% petrol when its get colder to see how that goes.

wolly Very Happy

just don't try mixing engine oil (new or otherwise) with waste veg as it makes glue and the engine really doesn't like it. Last year in the snow i was running my 2.8 pajero 100% WVO it was a little harder to start but otherwise no problems. Now i just chuck in whatever i can get for it

and yes, the musso is still on anything runny enough to go down the filler neck two times out of three.

forget this fourtrack 50/50 crap you keep hearing about.

Musso . been running on 100% cack, even in winter for over 100,000 miles now.

10% petrol ... in a diesel? Are you sure?

yup, thats the right dose richard.

2L in 20L of wvo.

see, 10% petrol thins veg by 50% ish give or take.

Mercedes recommends 30% petrol in its derv engines in cold climates.

with 2-EhN you can reduce that a bit.
