There may be a relevant thread somewhere so if so please refer me!
I want a tirfor winch for self recovery of my Defender 110 and sankey trailer. Which model should I go for?
Do I need pulling power of 800 kg or 1600kg? and do i look at the TU 8/16 models or the T508/516 models - I can't figure out the pros and cons of the TU v T5 series!

Get the biggest you can carry.
There good but hard work, and you cant burn them out either.

Tirfor is a brand. Worth considering Black Rat. Similar quality but lower price.

Excellent tool, they are heavy, slow, awkward and bloody hard work. But...they pull from all angles, don't flatten batteries, don't need a running engine, and they can be used in tight situations where another 4x4 with a winch can't get to. Mine has got me out of trouble many times, but so have winches.
I picked up my Tirfor and a very good German cable winch ( I can't remember the manufacturers name at the moment ) with a cast aluminium body at general auctions for about £25 each, which is bargain money for a versatile bit of kit.

I've got a big one i paid about £20 for a few years ago, i've not used it in anger but i've used others in the past, you can use them to stabilise your motor sideways whilst you use your electric one to pull forward

No - I agree you can't burn them out but they do have a shear pin - try to pull too much and it pops and then the winch is toast until you can take it apart and fit a new shear pin.
Brano is another make to consider - again good quality but less than a Tirfor new. I am fairly certain that all Tirfors and Branos these days are certified as rope hoists rather than winches, so the rated pull is for a complete lift off the ground. Again go for the biggest you can easily/comfortably manage.
My Brano is the 1.6 ton version, easy enough to handle and manage and pulled my DII up a couple of 45 degree slopes when it needed to so should be man enough for a 110 and trailer.
Don't forget you can reduce the load on the hoist by using pulleys same as you would for an electric winch, but does make it a d**n slow pull.
Regards - P
