hi
any of you knowledgeable lads out there know what is the best alternator to put on a V8.
i have a hybrid with a RR chassis, engine etc, i think the engine is an early carb one, i also have a warn M8000 winch. my one has had enough of being dunked in muddy water and died.
cheers
Al

I just bought a second hand one on ebay for £20 delivered that was from an old V8 and it was fine.
The old carb ones are 80A and the EFi models were 100-120A. Whatever your vehicle if it's reasonably standard then you'll not notice a difference I'd wager.
Best part is my £20 80A alternator is more than 9 months old now and still going strong!

Yeah, but you might want to upgrade the wiring between the alternator and the Starter.
At the moment this should be a thinnish brown cable, or 2 brown cables in tandem.
I replaced mine with starter cable so that I can use the back of my alternator as a place to jump-start as I can't get into the battery box.
Wire is about £3-4 for the short length wou need, and 2 heavy duty ring terminals. Crimp them on each end and heat with a gas flame, then feed in as much solder as you can to make sure it's well attached, and bobs your uncle.
Worth uprating it just in case you get a really flat battery and it decides to set fire to the cable!
Underbonnet jumpstarting is very convenient too.

If you want to take a large current out of the alternator for an extended period, then I suggest uprating the pulley/belt. The standard single 'V' belt might struggle, it would at least need to be tightly tensioned which is not good for belt life or alternator bearings.

Good point Tim.
If I run my stereo (65A total fused, might pull 40A when turned up loud?), all my lights (2x60W xenon headlamps, 2x100W grille-mounted spots, 4x55W roof bar, 4x interior neons), and the rest of the motor electrics, the alt belt does squeal a little at idle.
Raise the revs to over 1500 and it goes away, that's a lot of juice though...
45A (lights) 40A (not constant, but in pulses) 10A to run the rest of the vehicle electrics? = 95A peak drain!
