So many van drivers get caught out by that, and loose there vans
Intresting build loving it, just like some thing penelopy pitstop would be racing against. |
That's interesting. How do you mean "loose their vans?" (What about a tank of fuel, is that already accounted for?)
All my weights are exaggerated as well. For example. The timber merchant gives me the weights of my orders on the delivery note. Now, ALL of the feather edge cladding is "green" i.e it's FULL of water. As this dries out it'll shed kilo's... Literally. Additionally, there are lots of off cuts from the timber that are discarded. As you can see, the timber makes up for the bulk of the weight.
My table is to give me an idea as I go but I won't know for sure until I take it to the weighbridge when she's completed.
I've updated the table to include passenger weight as well as new calculations to show "part time load" which includes the passengers and the motorcycle and "surplus load" which is luggage allowance - (pots and pans and clothes etc.)
It's all cutting it quiet fine to be honest but like I said, with a bit of luck I'll get a pleasant surprise when I go to the weigh bridge.
Here it is:
Thanks again for all the interest.

For all the naysayers this is road legal and featured in a TV program so I don't see where the problem with this build is so long as C&U and legal weight limits are adhered to. I, for one, think it's a great build.

personally i think its a bit mad, but mad in a good way.
i like it.
not everyones cup of tea in the looks department yeah but its cool
and as to the comment about guys losing their vans for being over loaded, then they must of been serial repeat offenders. because the normal course of action is to weigh you, if over loaded work out how much then fine you, but then they give you the option to unload some of the load to get it road legal. whether this is to unlod and leave the stuff there and then come back for it or to get some one else to come pick up the excess.
as long as you dont exceed the maximum weight and load allowance then you should be ok, buuuut one thing ot consider is the big about load distribution. ie it should be evenly spread. heavy object on left should be counter balanced to right.
and have you thought about stiffening the rear end suspension up to cope with the extra weight on there?

I'm trying to keep all the weight as low and far forward as possible. For example, the water and gas storage will be under a seat up against the front bulkhead. There's going to be minimal overhead storage etc.
I have considered changing the rear suspension if it's required. I'll have to see how she handles. I anticipate it'll be OK though, she's not a racer and won't be involved in any serious off roading, just gentle byways and muddy festival fields when everyone else is stuck. I'll be within the manufacturers recommended loads as well.

Matt..
In reply. Your Vehicle must not exced it max kerb weight.
For eg. My van is a transit connect 200, giving me a pay load of 634 kg
It can take 60 litres of fuel me and my pasanger and our stuff (clothes food magazines etc) i allow about 100 kg for each person and 50kg for the fuel.
That means i can now load my van. If im on my own and have a full tank i can carry a load of 484kg or 384kg if i have a passanger.
If i load up to my 634kg max payload then fill up the tank and get in im over weight by about 150kg.
If im way over for example i have a passanger as well then the police or VOSA are likley to confiscate the vehicle on the spot if i cant bring he load down.
Last i also hurd is they fine you some thing like £1 per kilo your over plus a £60 fixed penalty ticket for over loading. If they put a prohibition order on it your also liable for the recovery, storage and disposal costs (normaly about £150 to recover £30ish per day and what ever the auctions charge plus the costs to take it to auction)
So you need to make sure your weight calculations include you your passanger and fuel as well as what ever you are carreying.
The build is looking fab though and tbh i cant see where C&U regs should come in as that shed would be a load and not part of the vehicle. As long as its secure and under weight you can carry what ever you want in the back of a pick up (has any one ever seen a bag of sand that conforms to C&U regs?)
The only real way to know what weight you have is take it to a weigh bridge. Just dont forget you passangers and extras thats where most people get caught out.

As wavey said watch your payload sums.
In the south west vosa have been taking great interest in caravans and motorhomes as lots are usually overloaded!
I was pleasantly surprised when I found the stated payload stated for my motor home had already had a reduction for fuel, water & driver but that is unusual.

Enjoying following the build.
I take it there are wider rear view mirrors being fitted and Sidelights at the front leading edge and Marker lights.
I prefer a lower camper for getting to the likes of beaches and car parks that require getting under railway tunnels
or barriers quite often.
Even using a Semi High roof Transit van stopped me from using many of my favourite camping locations.

There will be clip on extended mirrors like the ones that are used when towing a caravan.
I'd not really thought about lights.
I was going to put red reflectors on the back and orange reflectors on the sides and front.

I got on well over the last few days making a good start on the kitchen.
I'm not sure about the hinges though. I was going for a rustic look to match the whole build but I think they are just to chaotic and bold. I might replace them for some flush brass hinges instead. What do you think?
The heater and grill box I made from some scrap aluminium sheeting that I have. It's sprayed with a grey heat proof paint. The heater is a catalytic gas heater. They're very economical and are considered safer to use in a smaller space. Ventilation is still required though.
Here's some detail along the centre strip of the ceiling.
Demonstrating the insulation. I only use loose insulation in horisontal space because after time it can pack down in a vertical space. For a vertical space I use rigid insulation.

Makes it look like cheap hen houses
I'd go for something like this
Click the pic to the site then click on hinges and then cabinet hinges (second page if you have 50 per page) for prices and other types of hinges

I have to agree. The hinges cheapen the look of your excellent work.

What sort of speed will you be able to do with that thing strapped to the top? Looks great, by the way! I reckon that would very much suit, as loathed as I am to say it), the 'rat' look.
I quite like the simple non-'la-de-da' hinges.

I've fitted some calmer piano style hinges on the two small cupboards, the one below the grill and the one above the heater. This was where the most crowding was for me. It looks a lot nicer now.
I'm happy.
I think 55 - 60mph cruising speed will be comfortable.

Yes, the whole metric system is based on water. 0-100 degrees C is freezing to boiling... That ain't not coincidence! 1ml of water is a cubic centimeter and weighs one gram. A cubic meter of water is therefore a ton... 1000litres = 1000kg
Other liquids have different densities/ mass.

Pot kettle black. Guilty as well as others.
Any chance we can get back to agreed previously.?
'Custom Builds'.
Post by the builder on the build
and not an ever running slightly OT bunch of posts.
Unless some question or input is asked for!

Here's the door frame and the bottom half of the stable door made. The top half is going to have a port hole window.
The interior is also really starting to take shape. Although I've not got any of the seat cushion foam cut yet.

It's a slate effect laminate that was on offer.
I've used it for the floor and all the worktops. It weighs in at a grand 11.5kg
