As above, even the type with the wee floating balls are OK.
I always had great success with a pair of Gunson's colourtunes and you'll want a meter to get the dwell spot on as well, only way to do it right really.
A second hand gas analyser that has the dwell function might be a handy thing.
Roll the needles on a piece of glass and see they're straight or use the spring loaded ones.

Getting the dwel angle right can be tricky, distributor needs to be in tip top condition, and as above use of gas analizer/timing light/dwell meter is the best way

Search for 'SU carb adjusting' on Google. I think HF2? but I forget. You'll recognise it when you see it Smile
There are pins on the side of the carbs that lift the pistons slightly. Basically you are over-riding the vacuum effect against the throttle valve.

But these are tricky to use, so it is best to lift the pistons a couple on mm from the outside with a long thin screwdriver. If the revs stay the same all is good. If they drop or rise the mixture is off. Once that is done you can move onto the; going for a run and checking the plug colour.

The carbs need to be balenced as you adjust them (listen with a rubber hose)
They need the right oil in the pots (I use ATF).
The air filter may change the mixture slightly.
No point doing it if the needles are worn.
Plug Colour; Don't forget that one carb does two cylinders on each bank!
All the ignition side needs to be right to get a good mixture.
There is no substitute for a rolling road Very Happy

Honestly though, if its being a cow, or the plug colour is right off, maybe it has broken or just need re-con carbs? As the RV8 seems pretty tolerant.

When our plays up, there is usually a proper good fault- sticking float, got waaay too hot, blocked something (we nover figured out what)
