right ive never had a winch so sorry if this is a dumb question, but are winches waterproof? how would they cope with being under water? or are there waterproof cases for them?

No

They cope quite well - thing to remember is that water is NOT a conductor of electricity - dirty water is, clean isn't

No - although there are some dirt covers for some of the winches but these usually have to be removed to use them.
Keep the winch well serviced - use a good quality oil on the planetary gears, never grease. Using a waterproof grease on the outer end of the gearbox shaft may stop water entering the gearbox for a season, but you really ought to be stripping and servicing the winch at the end of the season.
I prefer to keep the solenoid box as high in the engine bay as possible as this is the most vulnerable part of the winch - I also use a remote control on mine and that is mounted in the cab behind the passenger visor i.e. as high as possible from getting wet
The winch is completely submerged at 7:20 (and working)
At the end of the day any decent winch should cope with water and mud with regular maintenance IMO __________________________________ Bert the Defender 110 XS - because it's Cool (work it out yourself!)

Probably the reason why my gearbox failed, big time.
I rebuilt my cheapo chinese winch with waterproof grease, in copious amounts.....
I first rebuilt my Warn with grease and wondered why I could hardly pull out on free spool then I got a maintenance pdf direct from Warn USA (No one over here wanted to help ) and it was that that advised good quality oil - free spool is brilliant now - even at the end of a season.

I have 2 goldfish winches and whilst I would never use the word waterproof with anything like this the goldfish winches come close without being silly money.
They come with albright solenoid packs rather than cans, and have seals against the drums to help stop grot getting in there. My winches are seldom serviced (they're not used enough), live outside and have never let me down.
The 2 most important things about fitting a winch is to wire it right (to the battery) and take care bolting it down to keep it square. __________________________________ Poking the Grim Reaper with a stick then running away. The devil made me do it but God said it was okay with him.
