Short version - looking for advice on electric winch for a vitara (<£300) ideally new. Also any tips on battery setup.
Longer version...
I'm going to build my own winch bumper for the front of my vitara - so i'm looking at what winch to put on there and then design around that. In an ideal world something like a 8274 would be great. As this is my first 4x4 and i've tried to keep the cost down i don't think I can justify a winch which will cost me more than the truck itself did! ( correct me if this statement is way off ).
I've done a bit of reading on what is important and the sort of pull i'm looking at etc. Don't plan to do any competitions quite yet so i don't think line speed is too important - more interested in reliability ( if i do it may not even be the vitara ).
Ideally - £300 is my limit (i'd like to know if this is unrealistic for my requirements). I've found the Champion 12000 CTA 12V Electric Winch - 2012 Model at £250ish - anyone got any experiences of this winch? Pull is probably overkill for me. Any suggestions on alternatives?
What's a sensible battery setup? Should I be looking at a battery with better deep discharge characteristics and an isolator circuit? Is there such a thing as a winch with a live output signal that can be used to switch the isolator circuit?
Thanks!

Thanks. I guess the downside of the shorter drum is less cable reach - but the upside is you can more easily get down to the lowest layer of turn (aswell as weight reduction!). Ever ended up in a situation where a shorter line has let you down?
Will put that on choice list - definately within budget by the looks.

Also while i remember - where did you mount the second battery? I think i read that right and the Yellow Top is your auxillary.

Neat! Ah so it's a replacement battery rather than running a second.
My model is EFI. Whats that you've(?) replaced the air box/panel filter with at the end of the flexible snorkel hose? Not very happy with the route my snorkel is taking to the airbox. Need to at least replace some of the original hoses/plastic bits - but if i could convert it to a setup like that i'd be much happier. My snorkel is safari and comes through where the battery is and a bit lower and then follows the bay wall into the airbox.

no it's a second battery running with a Tmax split charge system, if you look the standard tiny battery is on the other side (it's black) mines a 1.6 8v efi, my airbox came through where i have put 2nd batt, so i re-routed it straight through the wing, the airfilter is off eBay

Apologies I see it now.
My standard battery is where your Yellow Top battery is. My air box is in that gap just behind your coolant resevoir... which come to think of it is on the other side on mine too.
Mines 97' 16v so only a year between 'em. Interesting the differences in layout.
Thanks for the pic of the winch, fits nicely in there.

Just to confuse things - turns out i underquoted my no claims when getting the vitara insured so have received a fairly hefty refund! So my budget has gone up.
Last night i got motivated and made a spreadsheet of some of the winches i'd been looking at. Let me sort by columns and see where things stacked up. Noteably - very few Warn winches appeared in my list due to their high pricing. A few Superwinches (again at the spendier end) appeared in my list but when compared on paper looking at the specs the Warrior winches looked far more interesting. Inclusion of wireless remotes, the highest line speed under load on my list, and options for synthetic rope bundled in.
Here's what i'm thinking at the moment...
It's actually an s9500 i think - £500
http://www.electricwinchshop.co.uk/champion-c95...ai-12v-synth.html
Or the short drum suggested by sus found for £440
http://www.mm-4x4.com/warrior-9500sd-12-volt-sh...thetic-4416-p.asp
For the extra £60 i get a heavier winch, slightly less unloaded line speed ( 7m/min vs 6m/min ), but an extra 14m of synthetic rope. Any ideas what i'm missing here? I think the s9500 is a newer model.
Obvious difference on the spec chart is the short drum has a "full steel planetary" vs the s9500 having a "specially treated 3 stage planetary". Which is better? And why?

Went with a Warrior Samurai s9500 synthetic rope 12V. Ordered last friday. Will try to remember to post some pics once it's fitted, and some comments once tested. Could be a little while yet though.
