Hi,
I traced an oil leak to the top bolt of the chain dampener on the fuel pump side of my 1.6 engine. I tryed to tighten it up but it feels like it may be stripped or there is a nut on the other side that needs holding. There also seems to be a little free movement when going from tightening to losening, is this normal or is it possible that something is broken?
Does the dampener have threaded holes? Or is there a nut on the end of the bolt?
Thanks in advance

do you mean the one on the righ in this picture?
those have the threads in the holes from memory but they arent very strong. those slippers are also known for breaking up and falling off as well so may be worth taking the rocker cover off and have a look see.

Thanks. I will take the rocker cover off and have a look, it's due for tappet adjustment anyway. Looking at ones for sale online they appear to be plastic, so no wonder its broken. Hopefully the one on my spare engine is ok.

Good call on taking the rocker cover off. There was not much left of the slipper. It has done a bit of damage to the head, but I think it will be ok with a new slipper. Looks like the slipper is steel backed and has fixed nuts. Had to get it out with a magnetic pickup tool.

While I was rebuilding my Niva's engine (1700 carby) I actually wondered whether some sort of gasket should not be installed at that specific bolt, to prevent a possible oil leak.
At the moment I am re-installing the engine, and this thread makes me beleive that a gasket is indeed needed at that spot anyway...

I think it has a copper washer under the bolt head for sealing it. You could fit a fibre washer but there is risk it will settle over time and come lose. Some kind of liquid gasket would be ideal to help seal it.

Thanks - I have just buried the engine into the engine bay, and I hope to prevent any possible oil leak:
Has been quite a mess before I have removed the engine...

Well I checked out the damper on my spare engine and it doesn't have one. The mount has been chewed off and there is no sign of the damper. It must be in the sump. Looks like the chain is broke as well.
Where can I get a new one from?
