Damn bouncing off rocks and falling between boulders malarkey..............

You know those four out riggers in the middle part of an SJ chassis? The ones that the body sits on?

Well, the front ones seem to have burst right through -

And the rear ones seem to have various fractures in them -

And this is where the body on the left hand side has been sitting on the nerf bars/rock sliders, no wonder is felt a tad 'harsh'.....

Fixored -

New spreader plates (top and bottom) welded to the body and out riggers and new rubbers thrown in because it would be rude not to -

Simon 'his spine says thank you' Owen.

why bother with all that fabrication malarky, when a couple of rounds of duck tape would have done the trick nicely. stick to door.. over roof, under body,, front and back, problem solved!

I've never seen that happen on an SJ before.

I personally think its related to the body lift. Having the body lift allows more flex between the body and the chassis as the body is no longer supported in so many places and allows the body to move around quite a bit more especially when used off road hard.

I've never been a fan of body lifts myself for the reasons above, I'm sure it will be fine with the extra spreader plates now though.

I've seen it appen before - in fact the body on the one I worked on was so detatched I think it was a good job he had an exo cage on it else it would have fallen off...

I could jack the body up to touch the cage Shocked

To some extent I agree that a body lift will lead to different (or greater) forces being applied in certain situations but.....

"Bodge job" lifts with 2mm box section on it's side will be more problematic but 'proper' spacers - solid poly-carbonate or metal (if the reaction/corrosion issues are addressed) are fine.
If everything is bolted down well and all the mounting points are used then it shouldn't cause any additional 'flex' as such in normal day-to-day use. The COG is higher body/chassis wise but the same number of mounting points are being used and the body is supported in the same number of places, also the same force is still holding everything together.
There will be greater stress with side ways movement (and to a lesser extent front-back movement) due to the COG but I think (my engineering is fast disappearing) that the forces would still be the same just that they will be present at a lesser angle......?

Like instead of there being say 900kg of force pushing down/out on the lower side at 45 degrees it will now be 900kg at say 40 degrees due to the increased space between the two surfaces..........?

I'm thinking fulcrums and levers but it's not that, it's more along the lines of shearing and 'stuff'................

It's all down to the spacers, bolts used and the state of the metal they are attached to.

Regardless, I think they went because it's a 26 year old Zook thats been driven way too many times through the acid bath known as the Zin River/valley.
The front ones bust through first and I think this caused the rear ones to start to crack due to them taking up the strain.

I am sure that all the sudden shock, jolts and drops over the years are what caused the front ones to finally push through (that and the damn Nachal Zin/Dead Sea area corrosion) and I have seen similar cracks and splits on trucks of a similar age and use without a body lift.

I'm not saying that it is the only cause; just that the body lift will increase the forces and weight exerted on each mounting points so combined with the salty sea are and extra corrosion it could lead to the mounts failing faster than they would without the body lift.

Even bolted down tight, no matter what material/method is used, if it's combined with the existing rubber mounts it will a cause a bit more movement. However if you didn't use the rubbers it will not allow any flex between the two and probably give more transmission vibration so it's a bit of a catch 22.

Also with the body lift there are actually 12 less points of contact with the chassis that normally have a rubber pad sandwiched between the shell and chassis adding extra support against forces in all directions; they also help to spread the weight of the body over more surface area of the chassis so that the body mounts do not hold the entire weight of the body.

Just thought I'd elaborate on my reasoning behind what I said in my previous post, either way it will all be fixed and re-enforced now so shouldn't cause any future issues Wink

Then again maybe we should just blame Richard Laughing Laughing

I hate quarry P+P sites for that very reason, rocks have no give in them.

Spreader plates should work, but I always thought a welded on body lift with original rubber mounts should be used, the `bolt through spacer` ones worry me.

Best not mention my pickup then .,......

The same thing happened to both rear body mounts on my Jimny and it didn't have any body lift. I think it was due to me just giving it too much of the loud pedal and just bouncing through / over everything! I ended up making big plates to reinforce the mounts and they held on great, it was the rest of the chassis that ended up giving up the ghost.
