Have a 1997 4.0 limted XJ.
Starts, then cuts out after 1 or 2 seconds.
As it starts, I assume it is the immoblilser cutting in. Loads of similar issues on the web, but cannot find a solution.

Got an auto electricain in for a look. He disconnected the May & Schofield immobilser under the dash and put all the wiring back to its correct place. But this had no affect on the problem.

Is there another immobilser on these jeeps?

If I cannot find a fix soon, this will ned to be scrapped. A real shame, as otherwise a perfectly good vehicle.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same problem on a ZJ. I have been trying to sort it for more than 2 months and gave up last weekend.
I was going to scrap it but would only get £300 so have decided to break it instead.
I have not read of anyone fixing the problem.

May and Schofield immobilisers are programmed with the vehicles VIN. They communicate with the PCM (engine computer) over the data link. The PCM is programmed to know an immobiliser is fitted and will not start unless it gets communication from the immobiliser.

Unless you can reinstate the wiring and get a dealer to reset the PCM/immobiliser with help from May & Schofield. (search b i r t y d a s t a r d s.com forum for more info) you have limited choices. Scrap it, break it to sell for spares, get a PCM from the US from a 97 model without an immobiliser fitted. M&S immobilisers were fitted by Jeep upon importation to the UK and not used in the US.

How will this affect the remote locking?
As far as I can see the remote locking in my jeep is built into the M&S immobiliser. I do not have anything in the overhead console. So will it not still be immobiliser as the US PCM will thuink the jeep is locked

Have you checked the crank position sensor if it was an imobilisser fault i would of thought it would just turn over and not fire up

I have no idea about the remote locking. It not something that we get on 97 Wranglers. If my immobiliser is not switched off I'm not sure if it will even crank I'd have to try it to find out.

Have I been going down the wrong route all this time? It does turn over the start and run for 1 or 2 seconds. So does that rule out the immobilser?

It seems the UK immobiliser takes the place of the US SKIM security module. Lots of info out there, but it seems a new pcm and a aftermarket remote locking module may be required.

The UK immobiliser doesn't replace SKIM it pre-dates it. When SKIM was introduced in the 98 model year in the US it was also introduced in the UK. In the US it was an option, whereas here it was fitted to all Jeeps.

By scanned I assume you mean connected to a diagnostic system?
Got it plugged into a local garage computer, it did not identify the fault.
Nearest Jeeep dealer is 100 miles away, so that is not an option.

Is there another way to to pin down the actual fault to save me ***** around?

a jeep scanner will tell you whats wrong, as you say 100miles away is prohibitive Sad
