I'm modifying my original thread in which I was asking about thermostat installation, I'll leave it in below though as I'd still like to know if I did it correctly.
Anyway I have installed the thermostat now no overheating problems. I was hoping to fix my temperature reading too low but it is the same so I'm now thinking must be an electrical fault.
The temp dial moves up once warm but only to just above the C, if driven hard it will go higher, but not to where it should be, and it drops away pretty quickly after the engine has any rest. Sometimes it will drop right down as the engine goes to idle. Occasionally it will go up to half way and stay there like it should, but again I anticipate it falling away when approaching a junction for example.
I have cleaned up the engine earth and even tried running a wire directly to the battery, to no avail. I don't understand how a thermistor can go wrong but I guess the sender must be one of the culprits? It seems impossible to access, does anybody have any tips? Is it likely that the gauge is faulty? The fuel gauge behaves as normal so I imagine it's not a regulator problem.
Thank you in advance for your help, below is the original question.
I'm halfway through the replacement, I've just compared new with old and the only difference is the position of the jiggle pin and the little plate which I don't really know how to describe but that looks as it could impede flow. Here's a picture of old against new, I've circle the pin and drawn arrows to the indescribable plate.
The workshop manual says to put the jiggle pin at the top, but doing so would put that little plate in a different position and maybe block the water pump's flow. Which actually counts here, the pin or the plate? Or is it both and I need a different 'stat?
Thanks in advance for your help

The jiggle pin is there to allow air to flow through the system when you're bleeding the air out and the thermostat is in the closed position, that's why they say put it at the top.
To test the thermostat drop it in a pan of water on the cooker and watch to see if it opens as the water temperature rises. It might pay to test the old one, and if it does open as it should then you might need to look at other problems with the cooling system.
From memory, my old Independent temp' gauge needle never seemed to move very far up the gauge.

Is it a pattern stat? if so throw it away and buy a genuine stat from the dealer. Ive had more problems than that with non genuine stats.
Yes the "Jiggle pin" should always be at the top, as Mudplugger says its there to allow air in the system to bleed out.
Does the temp sensor have only 1 wire to it? if so short it to earth with the ign switched on and the engine off, if the gauge goes hard over into the red theres nothing wrong with the gauge side, its either the sender or stat or you have a very efficient cooling system.
If you can, try doing an actual temp reading from the water in the expansion tank/rad with the engine up to running temp and engine off, The fourtrack stat should open at 82 deg c, if after a good run the water temp is below that then the stat is sticking open.
Be very carefull opening the expansion cap on a hot engine, release it slowly and use a rag, its hot and under pressure

Thank you both for replying. I thought as much regarding the jiggle pin so installed it at the top. I think the sender has just one wire to it and is earthed through the engine. That's a very good idea shorting it (one I wish I'd thought of myself!) and I'll give it a go, I just wish the sender was in a more accessible area!
Thanks again
