|
Took my son to see the Steam Traction fair in Pickering Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago and I've only just got around to uploading some of the (many) photos I took.
I'll post a couple of highlights and link to the album on photobucket as there are too many photos to post up here without murdering everyone's connection.
Some lovely old stuff here and a great car boot type affair for heavy duty engineering and the like, if you need a stub axle for your vintage Foden truck then this is probably the place to pick one up
One of the many fine examples of traction engine:
Big boots on these wheels...
Impressively large torque settings on this thing:
Gorgeous old bikes:
They had a tractor pull
This APC or self propelled gun or whatever it is had no problem pulling the trailer
(I have a few videos of the tractor pull that I'll try and stitch together then I'll post a link as there were some lovely plumes of black smoke)
The fair was massive and naturally I had to visit the beer tent. Elliot was bored in here but dad wasn't

Some sort of Russian monster towing vehicle...
...with impressively large running gear
Elliot got excited by the collection of landrovers and various military gear, here he is dragging along my father to see the volvo with portals parked up a couple of pitches along...
Gigantic heavy haulage vehicle:
Considering what was written on the side I'd liked to have seen in the engine bay of this bad boy:

My father told me this is what roadworks used to look like:
Everything was shiny and polished:
Lovely example of an early FC:

Decided to take Elliot on the big ferris wheel but kept a good hold on the slippery rascal:
Lovely old Fodens:
If you zoom into this pic you can see a boy standing about five inches from that swinging boat there... a health and safety nightmare
Anyway there's millions and I have millions more I didn't upload, a great day out and I'd recommend it to anyone!
Here's a link to the full album on photobucket:

I've been to the Pickering Steam Fair twice in previous years - it poured down both times so most owners didn't have their engines in steam

We have camped for the whole show every year since 2001 but not this there was too much trouble from a certain group. Personal items stolen, intimidating behaviour , toilets removed for their personal use and at one point the toilet people refused to come on to site due to aggression and abuse when they tried to put toilets back in right place.

I have to admit there did seem like there were a lot of pikeys hanging around. I managed to barter some down for some knock off toms shoes for the mrs
That's a shame if there's some element there spoiling it for people.

Brilliant! Love these pics!
Stuff the bandwidth......get the photos up. If people can't handle the bandwidth, then they don't have to let it load...you already stated in the title it's pic-heavy, so that's good enough

You asked for it!
I'll post the ones that I can remember anything about (thread revival! )
Well I remember this well oiled machine as being one of the more impressive examples of traction engines going on (at least in my mind) because they were using two very similar machines to haul the sort of plough contraption between them - demonstrating the raw power of steam! I was amazed by the ploughsled that these (following pic) ballsy fellows rode down the field...
The thing moved like a bucking bronco on steroids...
Some sort of prime mover? I'm not well versed on Trucks but I do find them more interesting than the stuff that's going around today, which I feel is largely faceless.
Paintjobs were also nicer:
I dunno what this is but I like it!

Another Prime Mover of some sort... I'd loved to have had a chat with whoever had brought these beasts to the show but there was never anyone around which was a bit of a shame as I'd like to have got some pictures of the engines!
Some Military stuff:
Logging Trucks:
Here's some kind of heavy duty winch which is probably OTT for your 90.

Last...
It's the rozzers!
I suppose this is some kind of swamp or sand type thing.
Me and my younger brother used to rally one of these around the bottom field that was too steep for pretty much anything. I could get mega air with the brick and plank jump. It was great until my brother drove it into a barb-wire fence and ******** it up somehow. I was gutted.
A shot of one of the set pieces of old Roadworks hardware. They look old to me...
...Ivor would know
Earlier I talked about the tractor pull event but I forgot to mention that this thing was doing well, belching out great clouds of black smoke until the gearbox let go in spectacular fashion, much to the dismay of the hillbilly crowd.
It took nearly 5 and a half burly pie eating farmers to move it to the pits.
