|
|
|
So after a change in Project direction, I have decided to start a new build thread although the axles etc from the Vitara build will still be used. Basically the plan for the build has gone from being a Green laner / pay and play toy but also a part time commuter and competition vehicle to an out an out challenge truck but that can still be used for laning E.g road legal! So yes it will be IVA’d at some point!. I then decided I wanted to use a jimny as a base vehicle as I prefer the look of them basically! So here goes another build thread from the start, some pics of axles etc will be stolen from the other build.
So I picked the base vehicle up on Saturday from Andy (Baloo) many thanks to him!, had to uncover it first though!
Got it back to the workshop
Thought I’d offer these up, gunna take abit of work to make them go under!
Let the strip down commence:

yeah i was keen to get stuck in on sunday!, but no i didnt even try hand lifting it, was on my own untill i was just about to forklift it off when a mate turned up, but forklift was still the best looking option!
The hay came off the jimny but my jumpers still full of it after a trip through the wash!
build will probably slow for a while now as need to re-calculate everything i had done for the vitara chassis and make it work with the jimny chassis dimensions, but will be full steam ahead!
oh and it turns out it was the starter motor, gave her a bump and she fired right up!
Adam

yes that forklift is abit crude, probably should stop using it for this sort of thing but soo easy
hmm swings and roundabouts really, if i use the vit chassis i will have to move all the body mounts to get jimny body on, and the vitara chassis goes very tall front and rear so makes the engine high up once everythings been re-calculated it will probably be easier in the long run to use the jimny chassis, stretching the wheelbase abit won't hurt anyway

Then I ran out of gas had to finish it off with the arc! (that baby hasn't seen daylight in a while!)
Chassis should now be strong enough to hang my axles from so started on lower link brackets:
Had abit of a fire cutting these out
Also some more bits for the parts section :
That’s all for now

I thought it would be too, didnt look too bad untill i went near it with the grinder!. as it was only under the plasticky coating horrible gunky stuff it was bad so i guess it was trapping moisture.
Right, got the axle lower link brackets tacked onto the chassis tonight, obviously once its all been cycled and checked for clearance etc they will be fully welded and boxed in.
It seems my jimny was a Friday afternoon build! What with all the rust and then after measuring up for the rear axle and being confused why it wasn’t measuring square I realised someone at Suzuki did a pretty poor job of welding on the mounts on the rear of the chassis!

Holy crap I'd be tempted to start a new chassis from scratch if I found all that rust would probably be less welding involved too
Looking good so far though matey, im looking forward to seeing this build come together.

Worst Jimny chassis i have see, but looked a nice condition Red Jimny body with very faded 'red' upper body work that was pulled out from the straw.
Hubs, drums chassis etc all rusty
& the normally rust jimny wheels look clean as a whistle.
Without giving too much info,
what year was that??,
&
how come put off the road, was it because of the chassis rot??
was it parked for months in sea water & then put away wet
or jut brought of some island?

My current build is staying on YJs as I can't be bothered with the whole IVA process, however the next project will be off-road only and coiled

look forward to when work starts on that
George, its an S reg, was parked in a barn because Andy bought it from a neighbour with a plan to maybe use it for a project in the future. it was cat c repaired back in 06 so guessing thats why some paint has faded. N/s/r quater was blue before so guessing its been welded in, not too bothered to be honest will be chopped off anyway in the future.
anyway,
Got abit more done over the weekend, a lot of planning / thinking etc as with any build!
Got a temporary rear top link x-member in place but will need to drop down once engine / gearbox / transfer box and props are in just left it high for initial clearance.
Gap between chassis and rear wheels is not big enough for clearance under articulation so need to taper in the rear chassis section which is next on the to-do list followed by rear panhard. then I can flex the rear up and work out how wide I can put the shocks but avoiding fouling on the tyres on full travel!.
