drove through a big water filled ditch about 2000 rpm
cut out and wouldnt turn over
removed air filter and the water was full in the housing and the turbo pipe
glo plugs out cranked for a while and refitted
started with a rattle and lots of white smoke
drove home about 10 miles with loss of power and smoke but got better as the jeep got walmer
need to do a compression test tomorow but think a rod is bent
gutted

Sorry to hear that
Its easy to give advice after the fact but if you stall in water, you shouldnt try crank it over till you check the engine is water free first.
compression test definitely required
I once seen a TDI VW Passat take in water, 4 bent conrods replaced, engine still wouldnt run right, eventually turned out that the crankshaft twisted slightly

Just came across this post randomly, my father in-law has 2 engines that I know are 100% running, one out of Maverick and the other out of my old Terrano, if your interested I dont think he would want anything for them as hes getting his earbent off his wife about cluttering up the garage...
PM me if interested...

They're tough engines to kill...
This was my mates one: Video
After this we reassembled his engine and he drove it home fine. The electrics have a habit of getting wet and making it sound/look worse than it is

I did that to a company Landrover 110 many years ago, the mechanics kept saying the rough engine was a bent con rod after I'd got stuck in a flood, and they'd get around to doing it.
Three years later, at full revs towing a 3 ton generator up a steep hill and flat out in second the engine exploded, there was oil and bits everywhere, the engine was complete scrap !

From experience (yes I drowned a 2.7TD Nissan to around windscreen level), the engine is toast. Here by us (South Africa), the rebuilding of this engine is very expensive and hardly ever lasts or works out.
I replaced my motor with a Jap Import at a very good price.
That video is misleading and will cause damage as done here. Once you have turned out the glo plugs, turn the engine by hand. The starter is too fast and the holes for the glo plugs too small to allow that amount of water out that fast. Many guys do more damage at this stage than the drowning itself.
My motor dropped the cylinder pressure from 24-26bar to 10-12 bar over all four. The water pump decided to spring a leak at the same time, but the motor got me back home just over 200KM later. I had to stop every 15-25km to add water. My only indicator of low water being when the car heater stopped pumping hot air into the cab.
Three years later, I am still working on my snorkel, I just don't get it finished. In the meanwhile, I just stay out of water
