I find that hints are next to useless. A full and detailed description of the present together with a list of suppliers and a full case study of how the present will make her life better is the only way of getting the desired shiny thing at the right time. A timeline of favours you have done her over the previous calendar year strengthens your case considerably.

Usually August as I would ask for it to be combined with my birthday present which is in September.

i've learn't to rearrange my budget so that i buy myself the technical stuff as people don't understand what i'm asking for. I use things like birthdays for topping up my supplies of mundane stuff, like socks or coffee machines Very Happy

That does not work.
I once left a list of parts I needed to upgrade for my computer.
I left the list on my desk, I left a copy in the girlfriends laptop bag, I posted it on facebook. Exact model numbers and shops that sold them. With clickable links on the facebook one. I did this from September giving plenty of time to organise it.

Come Christmas day I opened up a parcel to find:

A VW van model and a grey jumper.

I gave up telling people what I want for Xmas.
Xmas 2010 for example, I got from my Mother for xmas, a DVD player and a Bill Bailey DVD.

I do like Bill Bailey, so that was fine. The issue here was that I hadn't had a TV for the previous 6 months. (And I still don't.) When she eventually found out her error some 3 or 4 months after, she said her reasoning was that I once asked what they did with their old dvd player when they bought a new one. This was 18 months previous to the 2010 xmas.

I just buy my own big gift - then ignore the nagging about spending money on myself!

Get a different wife. And no, Grant doesn't drop hints. If he wants something for the Landy we discuss it like adults and we work out how to manage to get it. He doesn't spend money on much, so it isn't an issue. Or a problem. Or a reason to start a fight or cast up all the money he has previously spent. It's his hobby and I got over it a long time ago.

It's easy:

Each of you just buy what you want for yourself, exchange the gifts (it doesn't matter if it is on different days (birthdays etc)) and then arrange a swap.
