So it's a Musso or a Fourtrack at the moment. If anyone has any other suggestions I'm open to hearing them. Thanks to all who've replied so far.

OK, on a different note whcih of the Musso or Fourtrak takes 235/75R15 on standard wheels? I have 4 good tyres that will go to waste otherwise (although I could eBay them).

Another vote for the musso. With the engine being an old german army work horse if it's got an oily substance in the pump it will run. Like I said in a previous post my fourtrak doesn't like starting on 100% svo in the cold up here in Lancashire where as the german engine is designed to start in german winters so a mere English winter is no problem. I'm actually on the look out for a musso myself as I've had enough of my fourtrak and good troopers seem to go for silly money.

It would seem to tick all the boxes, even thinking of changing the Maverick for one now!

All older type Merc engines run on anything without trouble, but beware, When Ged says that Sprinters will run on it too, he is not entirely correct. Later Sprinters went to direct injection and then common rail, its the older OM602 merc engines with Bosch PES rack type pumps that will run all day on 100% crap, the later OM602 engines went to direct injection and used Bosch VE rotary pumps, and are a bit more finniky as to what they burn.

When my Maverick throws in the towel ill be looking at a Musso to replace it or a Ssanysong Rodeious provided it still has the older type OM602 indirect injection engine.

Get a manual trans Musso, Autos suffer with Trans problems which are expensive to repair.

So what age range of mussos are we looking at that are best Ged? I've seen a 1998 one for sale not so far away but they seem to go up to 2002 which makes me abit cautious as most engines after 1999 have been butchered and hacked up to suit these god awfull emission laws.

I have been warned by a mechanic friend about gearbox problems on Mussos although he didn't specify autos. I think a Musso would be a better bet than a Fourtrak though, more civilised for everyday use.

yup,

the problem is that the gearbox and gear stick are linked by cables. and they snap.

ocasionally.

but if you carry a spare and a pair of longnose pliers you are on the road again in 10 mins.

or do a direct shift conversion.

OK, that doesn't sound too bad! I was thinking it was new/rebuilt gearbox time as he said it was due to the electronic transfer box.

does the engine have a mechanical fuel pump, or is it all controlled by an ECU? Smile

just thinking by the sounds of it, its a great engine, in what can only be described as an ugly car.

if its a mechanical pump, then it could be a great cheap car to buy, for the engine to then drop in something else. Smile

nope, the only electronics on the engine is the starter motor. the stop start, fast idle ect is all vacuum.
