Try to get all four wheels off the ground (or on a rolling road with independant rollers)..

engage 4wd , see if you can ascertain where the crunch is coming from

could you offer any more description? crunch coming from which side.. on road, offroad

DO NOT ENGAGE 4WD on tarmac... doing so - bad.

Sounds like the CV,my old tin top did it,took them apart cleaned and regreased, worked ok fo 3 months then came back worse, clunking made the jump.despite what the manual says the outer ones can be removed by putting in a vice and knocking the outers off.Maybe just as cheap to get a new one after checking them out.

Either a CV joint, or a UJ on its way out. I had one replaced recently, and it was clicking, (but only when I applied throttle).

I get the 'jump' sometimes I found a new one for £16 on the bay so I might grab a couple and swap em over, for the sake of 32quid it will be worth it =]

It's just transmission wind up due to running 4wd on tarmac, or any grippy surface.

If you find out you do have an outer CV gone, they are cheap on ebay:
