There will always be some traffic lights that will be necessary but there are an awful lot that are not and others that are only necessary at peak traveling times for the stretch of road that they are on.
There have been, and still are, an awful lot of bad planning decisions made by councils regarding road layout.
In a world that is supposed to be decreasing carbon footprint why are councils allowed to approve a road scheme that will only increase it e.g. traffic lights, traffic lights on roundabouts, bus lanes, dual carriageways reduced to single carriageway by making a part of the first carriageway a cyclepath and no doubt many other examples.
BTW having some/most and most/some options which are essentially the same, has the effect of loading the poll to ensure either a yes no result

It's not in the Govt's interest to remove traffic lights.
They're a nice little earner for the Treasury; all those vehicles sitting there with their engines running, burning fuel...

Well said.
We could remove most of them if the average driver had an average IQ.

I voted yes, since our hobby revolves around making our vehicles as capable of taking abuse as possible, I'm happy to start playing bumper cars

Hi,
Roundabouts are only a god thing when there is no queue to get onto them. As soon as a queue forms, "level crossing gates" should turn them into cross roads.
Traffic lights are OK on some cross roads, never on roundabouts.

Were always optional in Naples.
Traffic just merged and biggest/most bashed car took precedence. Everyone just slowed down and filtered into the flow or pushed through.
It worked.
Only got accidents when the lights were put in (before they were generally burned down by the locals) or someone sped though without looking.
Made sense.

When the busiest junction / lights fail here in Telford ( home of the roundabout ) traffic moves smoothly, we just do as the USA and Canada do, we take it in turns.
But then some tw t in an Audi always barges in and spoils it.

How dare you insult me, I don't drive an Audi!
Must admit I struggled when I first moved to Sheffield as red meant 3 more cars can come through. Then I moved away from Sheffield and struggled again when I was the third car and the first car stopped on a red
I was driving through Vegas once when someone who looked like snoop dog and was driving a big old batteted yank car cut me up at traffic lights even though I had the green, I apologised for getting in his way and waved him through

you can start by getting rid of traffic lights on roundabouts, they are simply counter-inducive to the purpose of a roundabout which is to keep traffic moving smoothly and freely, and a daft idea at the best of times. and "part time" traffic lights. really? wtf are they all about? lose the lot of them.

Hi,
Put speed bumps on the roundabout .... if traffic came round at 15mph it would be easier to barge in. I'll get my coat.
My mate used to drive down the bypass at 30mph in the school bus, long line of traffic behind him. He said that when HE reached the roundabout there wasn't a queue.

of course, if we culled the weak drivers from the herd then we'd have more space on the road, more people on public transport .....

we have recently had lights fitted to a major traffic island in my town that in the rush hour would add 30 minutes to my journey...since the lights are there there is rarely any queue at all.
bit of a chore on the way home at 3am though....why not switch them off outside peak times to save leccy?

why limit it to drivers, apply it to society
What are those lights for at the bottom of sliproads? They go green at you have 50 yards to get a 40 tonne truck upto motorway speeds

Hi,
You mean the red and amber lamps?
Taxi drivers wear green tinted spectacles, which have the same effect.

Shouldn't be an issue, motorway speeds appear to mean 15-20mph a lot of the time anyway.
