Some of you will have noticed I have an advert running on the rhs of this page.

I have just tried to change the copy of the advert and it has been disapproved by the moderators.

With no other means of contacting anyone at this time ( I have just tried the advertising phone number ) can yopu please let me know either by PM, email or post on this thread what is wrong with the new copy and why my advert has now been removed altogether.

Many thanks in anticipation of your reply

David

Nothing to do with the mods. You need to speak to the advertising people at Difflock

I did perhaps think that but could not understand why it showed an 'Awaiting Moderation' status for 5 mins before changing to a'Disapproved' status leading me to believe it was a moderating thing!

I will speak to them either tomorrow ( saturday?? ) or on monday am....

Are you people serious? The adverts go someway to paying for this free forum. Whether you decide to block them or not do you really think it's a good idea to tell the advertisers that you aren't seeing their ads and that they are wasting their money? Rolling Eyes

And for the record I don't block the ads and always click on the new ones to see what they are all about.

I have to confess to having bought something as a result of seeing one of the adverts!

As Ian said, this forum is here solely as a result of commercial enterprise ...... , I hope I can leave you to fill in the blanks

Yes Ian I'm very serious, I'm honest enough to say that there are ad blockers out there that will block adverts on a forum - obviously you're not.

Asking potential advertisers to fork out serious amounts of money without telling them that their advert can be blocked is a bit "shady" to say the least

easy there, lumpy!

The Moderators have no control over the advertising, the forum design or the commercial aspects of Difflock. We are simply pointing out that it may be better not to bite the hand that feeds the Forum.

as for your second point - it ain't nuffink to do with us.

Maybe the more pertinent question would be "why do you block the ads"

If its a bandwidth problem or similar then a solution could be found.

Personally I don't block the ads, mainly because I'm nosey and want to see what's new, and because I'm blessed with quick broadband.

The way I see it, if I want to buy something I will find it myself...
Pretty much none of the ads are relevant to me (and my zook) except Dave's ones, but I'm hooked on Llama 4x4 already!

Obviously a lot of people aren't in the same situation (i.e land rover owners) and the ads do apply to them!

Its fair enough using ads as a form of revenue, but it does discourage people joining the site when half their screen is taken up by them.
(Not so much on a proper PC with a big screen, but have you been on Difflock on an Acer Aspire One netbook?)
Dave's not an idiot and I'm sure he's aware that people can block his ads.

I'm not having a dig but I think the way the ads have been done could have been better. Anyone with a small screen can really struggle with the fixed width ad bar! It would have been much better if the ads were just at the top or the bottom...

Anyway, personally I think that on a forum word of mouth is a much more effective way of advertising your product.
Anyone I know who has used Dave's products wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and his services.

stop rubbing my nose in it Laughing

Twiss
design is always subjective. I use a Dell vostro 1350 with a 13" screen and I find large pictures more of a problem.

Even on 128k connection they don't really slow my browsing.

People seem to forget about the value of telephones in this modern day and age Wink

Rich, I agree that the design is a subjective thing, but the main reason I block the ads is because they don't fit properly on my netbook. I'd rather block the ads and be able to read the forum! My browsers are all linked so what is blocked on one PC is blocked everywhere.

As for large images, there are plenty of image resizing plugins for phpBB available.
We have one on Suzuki Club and it auto resizes ALL pictures posted to 640x480, not just attachments!!!
It's OK though because you then have the option to click the picture and it will open full size.

Just some food for thought...

Seems that both the first and second points are nowt to do with the moderators...

I won't go down the road of biting hands that feed the forum cuz you won't like what I say - although you're only the moderators, and being only the moderators you'd be the wrong ears I'd be burning...

Because I find flashing adverts very irritating and annoying so they get blocked because they interfere with the post I'm trying to read - sometimes understand (if it's a technical one).

I frequent forums to educate, amuse and sometimes annoy - both myself and others not really to buy, unless someone recommends it as being good.

Like Twiss I can use a phone and search on Google, so usually if I want something that's where I'll start looking.

I understand why Difflock went commercial...

...but I come here for a forum and not to be inundated with ads I have no interest in. Last time I bought anything (apart from bits in the Difflock store) was after reading some reviews in the Difflock Mag section. In fact I think I spent the best part of 1000GBP with the companies involved.

Is the desire to make money so great rather as opposed to just covering costs? I find ads such a turn off that I actively avoid embedded advertising as they invariably comes from some googlesque browser spying on what I type.

They move, they flash, they change and take up a lot of space and I hate the way adverts have to load before the post, and if they are coming from a slow server...

A few words on my online buying habits.

I hate ads,
I use blockers when i remember but i never buy anything from a site that forces it self onto my screen uninvited, whether by pop up, link or advertising panel.

I regard these ads with the same contempt as spam & junkmail. No matter how cleverly the advertiser thinks he is with his targeting they nearly always get it wrong.

I will howver buy happily from a site recommended by a post.

I will only ever buy from sites that take paypal as it is the ONLY method of online payment i am prepared to use (even if it costs a few ££ more)

Obviously none of this applies to Dave as been around since before Noah & just about everyone has used him at some point.

I only ever watch the BBC really.
... and then I only watch Top Gear lol
(No adverts during top gear Wink )

Normally if I want to watch something I will just download it.
If I see a film is on later that evening, I will download it so I can watch it all the way through with no ads Smile

That's why Sky+ is great.... find programme you want to watch... pause programme, have cigarette... when finished theres enough in the buffer to FFWD all the ads Wink

I don't watch TV because there is nothing on TV worth paying a licence fee for - anything I want to watch I will do so on iPlayer.

Actually I've often found, when I happen to be in a TV lover's home, that the adverts on TV are usually more entertaining than the programmes they break Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Not only do I agree with you on this but many, many, other people do as well, the only thing I will semi-disagree with is the use of PayPal, I find a great deal of people do not trust PayPal enough to have to leave their card details with them and so prefer to pay direct by card
