Hi guys my current build is slpwly nearing completion so i have started gathering parts for a new toy again lol. I have a 96 discovery chassis, 3.5 v8, 8274 winch trays, 15" wellers.i am thinking of four linking it and fitting stronger axles like d2 or yotas. Prob some sort of spaceframe and air shox or coilovers. Whats ur verdict? Any pics for inspiration? I like theidea of yank rock racer style

A rear engine Offroad Armoury style truck with a reasonable amount of leg room (I think they went too far there). With bolt on tractor wings for msa events.
I like the bulkhead winch that does pull down as well. So I'll voto for the american style
However, what I really would love to see built is an amphibious truck with ally hull and vit front ends. I won't be doing it, but that really would be somthing

Play with the current build and enjoy it!
Disco chassis and axles and fancy suspension done to death. Depends a lot on the terrain you want to cross too. For extreme lumps, bumps, mud, rivers etc then portals and high clearance are good. Low gears and a diesel engine.
Say a diesel engine, coil springs, strong but flexible frame, portals, difflocks and three link suspension for the ultimate travel. Maybe short wheelbase and a good steering lock. Big wheels, not less than 40" would be good. Maybe a PTO winch or hydraulic?
Hmmm, we just reinvented the Unimog!!
What about a Praga 6x6? Not that expensive, drive on a car licence with a pre '60. Portals and difflocks. Stick on a roll cage and way hay
Simca Sumb? 3 links, Portals and difflocks with a V8. Stick on a Jimny body.
Renault TRM 2000, same as above but diesel.
404 Unimog?
All of the above would be cheaper and more capable than a lot of buggies out there.
Disco axles and chassis could make a nice low fast comp safari thing but maybe not so competitive now compared to independent suspension.
Try something different.
Good luck, looking forward to the vids of the current build too!

Definatley something different, theres northing else to do with a disco unless you do a framed type buggy, look outa the box kida, i found one ugly but different 4x4, you would be lucky to see one around the UK, the reason i like it, very different

If you want to go that far I say why bother starting with a production chassis?
Just start from scratch
P.s. I stil want to see some pics of the current build

There is an unbelievably good bargain of an Unfinished 100" buggy in the Devon 4x4 forum, for sale/wants.
Many good parts.

as above with jamie and scott,
first you'd do well to beat a standard mog or simca, although if you want something zook size theres nowt wrong with a haflinger-and more than a bit different! i seem to remember theyre ifs+irs with portals and lockers-bit of a mini mog
and also why use a base chassis-youd do better to build your own like scottie suggested, but go indy front and back, i would use something like vw syncro or quattro diffs and maybe shafts (they have lockers front and bvack in some-or run a back in the front upside down etc. use a front wheel drive auto car (something like a honda, although recently i noticed the volvo t5's are very powerfull, and front wheel drive-not sure if the do an auto though?)(dont forget you need to weld the centre diff realisticaly) and mount the engine sideways so that the props go to each diff instead of to the wheels- then hydrostatic steering-simply because its so simple and you wont have problems with space for exhaust manifolds etc. hydraulic winch-really simple and fairly light oh and veeerrryy fast!!! then run nothing less than 40's- you will have masses of ground clearence, you can keep a low COG and have oodles of power low down.

you could always sell the 44 to buy a set of mogs (theres plenty of jeepers think that the 44 is the be all of dana axles ) me personly think its not much better than the dana 30 and for similar money get the dana 60 or bigger dana axles
but hey if you got them and build a lightish wieght buggy you could run 35-37
it all depends on what your planning on doing
as for mogs they can work out very wide if you want to run discs and wheels less than 18" unless you shorten them and have custom shafts made

it would appear that your keyboard letter T is playing up as well piggy
Wez is a sound bloke who has built some great trucks and ill add, used them in comp's
like howling/wolf....

I'm so sorry i missed out a letter "t", I'm gonna go and remove a testicle now as punishment
i hope that wez hasn't taken offense to the tooth pic remark.. i asked about the missing "o" because i cant understand his posts with missing letters
and rick4x4, i'm sure wez is a sound dude.. i never said he wasn't... is there a bit of man love between the both of you... so you feel you need to step into his defense
i promise to use the spell checker in future, now as i only have one testy.

Cheers for that rick. And just to set the record straight piggy i bought them as they were extremely cheap. Would get more cash for them if were weighed for scrap. Will be used on a toy not a comp truck as my new comp truck is nearly finished i coulda bought a set of portals but not that bothered bout gettin a set. Each and everyone to their own and all that but as i said b4 i recall you querying wether or not to run landy stuff or DANA stuff so crawl back in your box n keep your comments to yourself unless you ave something creative to say. End of rant..... I have thought and decided to scratch build a chassis/spaceframe and possibly run mid engine

Have you been snooping round my workshop ?
That sounds like my build parts list.
And yes t5's do come in auto flavour (i have 2 of them) but a manual would be just as suitable as they are cable change so spinning the shift round would be easy.

dudes you are sooo wrong... armchair offroader... ********, as you refer to the rear steer, i have done it, yes with a 110 axle, i was asked how to do it and was shot down, in the post rick refers to. yes wezbee i did ask about landy and dana in the early days of the spider build, but decided to go mog as thats what true spiders run
now everything you talk about doing reads to me like you want a spider, so research in on pirate Scandinavia, and build one, if thats what you want, but there has been a few posts lately that talk about reinventing the offroader, but really talk about a spider
i am sorry if i like to post sarcastically

not much i expect, apparently theyre looking around 300 hp standard on the twin turbo ones, but im not 100% how accurate that is...

ooh well nive to see theres someone who might not laugh at my ideas
thats interesting about the cable gearstick however i would rather the auto as you dont lose drive changing gear on hillclimbes etc, however they can be a bit exiting when the throttle gets jammed as i found out at kirton

Iv got a n reg Volvo t5 engine and auto box for my ongoing Jimny project. Got 230bhp as standard, and has simple electronics so no fly by wire throttle. And pretty cheap to buy.

Mines a T5R that's been been mapped to 340bhp and only 60k on it
There a strong engine and light (full alloy)
In a light buggy it should fly ! Maybe literally Pmsl
It's auto so I'll have more chance concentrating on where it's pointing
