Slow progress but for some reason i dont think it will take much to egt her on the road.........famous last words and i wish i didnt say that know Rolling Eyes

Neil ( minibreaker ) poped around last nite with a box spanner so i can get on a bit more today, cheers Neil Wink

The ways i can think to lift these beasts is to either, fit new lifted springs, extended shackles that being a max 2 inch IMO, or SPOA.
I have read that a lot over seas put 2 inch blocks between the spring and axle for a lift, but i cant get my head around how that will do much, just push the wheel into the arch more aswell. Easy job but not for ,me.

If i ever do a lift i think i will, if flush, go with new springs, but extended shackles first as i can make them for near nothing and see how they do.

It cant be body lifted as the body is welded to the chassis, which i would of done.

Well back to it and get these wheels baco on in the depths of winter........i SOOooo miss this off roading lark Rolling Eyes Laughing

looking at the pics yours is an overslug axle, like a series, i have seen flip the axle to gain height on them (making it under slung) and gaining good height

this kind of idea..

As in SPOA Wink

I would but as this is a LWB at 10 foot i wont be doing any hardcore off roading, that will be for the next project.

The wheels arrived the other day Very Happy Very Happy , the wheels are a but rusty around the edgae but it is an off roader init, the tyres are near as new and for what i paid i am happy with them, they are 31/10.50 on 15`s, came off a CJ7, i just realised that i can keep the silver hub caps for the rear wheels but not the front as the free wheel lockers are on.

I think kits looking sexier all ready with her new rubber Wink

No lift as not needed, and i was told by Dave (llama 4x4) these were actualy made for 31`s not the 205/75 tyres they come with.

Dont know now many i have thought about fitting 33`s today.
But as i only paid £30 for tbhs one and it has common tread i will keep it Neil, if you added it to your SJ the steering would be even worse Laughing , better with three of the same size Laughing Wink

This will be a daily drive so the main concern is the fuel economy and top speed, at the minute it should do around 24mpg but with 33`s i am guessing it will loose a few mpg, but then i will, hopefully be going veggie.

What i mite do is see what other tyres i can come by and a set of 10x15 wheels and also see what lift i can do. Then swap to 3`s and see what happens.

Still contemplating on 33`s Rolling Eyes

Not done much except for a bit more stripping down.

The rear was plylined and it was very spongy, what was to be found.......

And with a help from a crowbar, not exactly needed though, as it was that rotten it came off by hand,

Not bad, i even had a go with the pick lightly to check for rot, not a hole Very Happy
I did remove the chqure plate and that was the same condition, pritty chuffed.

I drove it off the drive, carefully as all i have is a hand brake, so i can get under easyer on my trolly and all look just as well, found why the low-high lever was a bit easy, the ball joint is disconected.

You got to admit, it look fine Very Happy, i hav etaken measurements for a camper body and priced materials, looked at a few second hand ones, save a whole lot more ( £000 ) to build my own, and will be more rugged i reckon, i want to build one that can go green laning so will need to be strong.

Lift blocks only work with SPOA, if used SPUA then it lowers the vehicle.

Either way avoid them like the plague, they just increase the leverage on the springs that you already get with SPOA and will increase the amount of spring wrap.

Smile Oo thats a long one you have! Cool

Here is a couple of pictures i retrieved from an old thread that you had about campers.

This Ibex belonged to an elderly gent i used to meet in Scotland.
He travelled every winter around Scotland in this Desmountable.
(Not seen him this year yet, hope he is well.)

That is Sooooo not going to happen, love it as it is, maybe 33`s though..........have i said that before Rolling Eyes Laughing
And `Tickle` come on kida, Rolling Eyes Laughing

Cant believe how much it looks like an IBEX from the side George, think thats why i like the UMM, couldnt afford an IBEX.

Keep your eye open Neil, you never know, one mite just turn up, there was one being broken on preloved not long ago , i spoke to him and he would of sold as whole job at good price.
That wee compressor is quicker than the garage fourcourt one i used at first
Shocked Wink

Found out to day that the rear edge of the tyres hit the leafs on full lock, so either deeper off set wheels or wheel spacers, but all tnat can wiat to see if i get the bigger tyres fitted.
Got the brake seals kit today, so thats the next job inline, mite get a bit of welding done this weekend, weather dependent Rolling Eyes , i mean it needs to be cold, getting to old for messing with casr in this just above freezing weather, the reason i want a camper not a roof tent, a lot cosyer Very Happy

Thought i would get a bit done yesterday, so out came the old faithful, i started to cut out the rusty bit under the seat, fair bit of difference cutting this 2mm towards the norm, anymore holes and i could get a good weigh in the cut outs Laughing

I was going to plate it today but as the skys have opened to the dam snow, i think i will give it a miss this weekend.

The calliper seals arrived last week but the dust boots seem to be to big to go into the callipers, the seals are ok just the dust boots Confused, i mite just get rebuilt ones yet.

I also found another problem whuile i was driving it back onto the drive, the reverse gear selector rod has snapped, well it looks like there was a problem with it in the past for some one as it had been tack welded inplace, the weld has gone, not a big problem but a pain to get at, better to find it now than if out and about as when the reverse selector rod went it make the main gear selector rod come off easy. These are knowm for bad linkages so if i can i will get a full replacement set for peace of mind.

The snapped bit is the threaded ball joint on the top end, would be easy but as said awkward as the end where it is snapped has the rest welded in so by looks it will all need to come out to remove the end bit thats been tack welded in.

I removed the body trim to see the condition underneath, and suprisingly its all good Very Happy

Have you thought about using some good quality ply to make your demountable? Maybe make bulkheads to start then screw the sides and top onto that and seal with fibreglass + resin? similar to aircraft/boat construction.

Hi mate, yes that is the plan, either steel or ally lower frame for strength for lifting off/on then 18mm ply clad base and the top of as you say ply and then laminated with a couple layers of 450grm csm and a tissue. Now if i lay up more i mite be able to do without an inner frame ( but a main frame of steel or ally, prefer ally for light weight ) and just insulation and an inner ply.
All it will need to keep it strong is more laminations on the corners than the sides realy, But i want the corners to have a bit of radius so i have looked into the best way to shape the corners, i have thought of using REP foam and sanding the edges to get the radius and then i can laminate on top of that and doing out the outer ply, save weight that way aswell, but cost a little extra as the REP foam isnt cheap. I need REP foam as other foams melt when it comes in contact with laminating resin.

Decisions decisions Rolling Eyes Very Happy

Not as heavy as some would think , 1.7ton for the LWB, i am looking forward to welding this as 2mm is a lot easyer than tin Wink

Over the last week or so i have been doing some more on the UMM, i finished the floor i cut out under the drivers seat, all seald up and done.

The wings needed a bit cutting out as said earlier, not a great deal, i wanted these to be a better job so i cut to fit and but welded inplace to get it cleaned back neat, although most will be under the trim its better incase i do away with the trim in the future.

Looks better cleaned up

Inner wings needed doing aswell, shows how much easyer it is to weld this thing up.

There are a few out riggers down each side as here, there is one that is gone and need to be replaced, the other are just surface which will be cleaned back and sealed.

Not to forget the one i need to put back under the driver seat that went when the new floor went in. I have borrowed a box folder to see if it will bend the 2mm plate to shape, if not i will just get some 25mm bow and 2mm plate to make new ones.

I called Country Vehicle to see what they have left for the UMM, good thuing i did as i was going to wire in new rear lights but they have the lenses i need to replace the broken ones, well all excpet the reverse lense as one is broke. I am calli gthem back in the morning to see if they managed to get the other parts i need, engine fan, brake reservoir caps and cab heater as this one works but doesnt direct the heat, just blows it through all vents.

I am still looking for second hand calipers, no rush yet as i still have a few bits to do, exhaust needs a fettle, mite shorten it yet to come out the side in front of the back wheel, but it just needs a few mounts and a small plate welding on. lights need lenses, Oh and bit more welding Rolling Eyes, interior need new insulation, i will be keeping the seats, i pressure washed them down and now are clean and dry to go back in once i redo the mounts as i cut them out to get the carpet out. Then theres new interior carpet, cant decide on what colour, but then i am not bothered about that just yet, i want to concentrate on getting it on the road for now.

One last thing i have reverse again Very Happy , i just managed to get my drill into the tranny tunnel to drill the lever out to 8mm instead of the 6mm, i did this as the best clevis pins are all M8 to 8mm pin. I am so glad i got the grinder in and drill to do this otherwise it would of been a pain of a job to get the reverse selector arm out to drill out.

Feels so good to drive it again, even back and forth a few feet, clutch is keen Wink, and upto know all low/high, 4x4 etc works fine, i mite see if the farmer at the bottom of our street has a patch i can try it out on, the usual lane i try these projects out on has a been gated off.

So getting there, slowly but surley.

Well it stops aswell as goes now i sorted the brake sout, got another caliper the other day so fitted it with new discs and freshen up of the system.
Also got a new fan and lights etc so ln they went also, just need a white lense now for the reverse light.

I was going to redo the exhaust today as i want it shorter and to come out of the side, but as it was such a nice day i decided to mess about a bit Wink

I mentioned a while back i want a removable hard top as like my old SJ, so ehre is what it will look like, well sort of.

This ones for you Sman Wink

And screen down, although i put the bulkhead back on to see where it would look like, i will be redoing that i think, mite do a canvas one yet with hard top.

Would look better with the doors off aswell, mite about that, dependes if i would use it much with the screen down.
