|
|
|
Well say here fed up waiting to get my new project home, cant even decide what to call it, its the feminine bit of me, i like to name my cars
Now the project is to be a rare bit of kit for the UK, still a lot around form there home country of Portugal, although i have found a few people who can help me out to find parts IF i need them , you reckon i will need any after 6 years of being sat there. There one chap called Carlos who is a whizz with these things by looks of it, he lives in Portugal and has a fair few and there is one ot two places over here who have parts and can import them.
Well the pics for those who havnt looked at the UMM thread, now please dont laugh, its my green godess , one name i was thinking of for it, but then i will be painting it red.
[img]http://forum.difflock.com/userpix/6129_6129_tn_IMG_1778_1_1.jpg[/img_]
Its an UMM Alter 2 LWB, as these were the only ones imported into the UK, although they did SWB, it runs the Pug 2.5 TD ( this one is a recond with 0 miles on it, well i have been told ) engine as used in LDV 400 and the old Ford Granada`s, 5 speed manuel with chain driven T box either 2 or 4 wheel drive, Oh and has rear LSD in the Dana axle, 30 rear and 45 front with SJ, Hatso etc wheel PCD.
The plans at the minute are
See what needs replacing mechanicley
Sort rust spots/holes/craters, i think there will be a few.
Now depnding on axles, if these are shot then i am thinking about using discovery axles , either way it will be SPOA`ed.
33/12.50 rubber
New seats, nice chunky comfy ones, no buckets etc. Clean up the interior.
Internal cab cage, external front end.
Front and rear winch
Paint red
And if all of that goes to plan i hope to build demountable camper body
But that will be a while off i think.
Now that an order of build as you know it doesnt often go to plan these plans do they. Also as i/we dont know all that much about these UMM`s tjhis will liely be a slow build as doing a SPOA on this can alter things i dont know about, so it a bit more learning i think.
Wish me luck
Wolly

John who runs Cowm Leisure P&P site has one of these and he's not too far from you, only thing I've noticed is it has Grand Vitara deep offset wheels on it, whether they are a straight swap or not I don't know, he had it given, lucky boy, it gets about at the site though.

His contact number is on there I'm sure he'd have a natter and share any knowledge of his.

I wondered when the V6 idea would turn up , as i know the engine thats in at the minute gives around 24mpg as its the TD, i would like the same or better mpg as it would hopefully be used all the time and for camping, a 24v cossie enigne, sound sweet but i bet it would guzzle a bit .
A lot also depends on what i am going to do with the rest as in axles and G/T box.
BUt by eck it sound stempting that cossie

if its the early one BOA then its an easy fit .the wiring is a doddle to do .
however if its the bob the wiring is a right nightmare to sort out .
ive got a cossy autobox ,torque converter and flywheel in the back of the garage for the BOA , don`t know it`ll fir the later one .

Its home, thanks to Danny (BigPatrol) and the lads
I had a bit more of a look over it this morning at it realy doesnt look all that bad body wise, all straight panels, had a look under a few trim parts and the ones that moved away a little fairly looked good, chassis i need to gte under yet, saying all this though we all know how a 5p holes turns into a rather bigger hole, i just hope it has rusted well, they are built more heavy than usual vehicles with 2mm body panels and 4mm chassis rails.
Dont know why but i worked out it was just over 14 foot long, more like 15`9", just fits on the drive, as soon as this boat is shifted i will flag the build area and get to work
I have noticed that the rear bulkhead is screwed and siliconed onto the cab , also the i knew before that the screen is hinged, i am going to look around and see if the roof used to come off, if i can, well i can, i will alter it for the roof to be removed and bulkhead removed for the summer days
As it is a reconditioned engine and now told it actualy last run 2 years ago, i am tempted to see if it will turn over and fire up, it isnt seized and turns by hand nicely, just need a battery now.

/\ I agree, maybe some fresh oil and fuel in first, I'm guessing its going to take some cranking before it fires which will let the oil pressure build before it runs.
As for the topless thing...
I have run my Sj with no doors roof and frequently with the screen down from late march to september for the last 2 summers, its too much hassle getting the roof on and off properly so I just leave it off all summer.
I have found its a good idea to get some "tuff seat covers" they are totally watertight, if its rained in the night just pull the cover back over the backrest off the seat to reveal a dry seat underneath, the wet cover flaps about and dries as you drive! also get a bit of lorry canvas or good thick tarp to chuck over the seat and things in the back just incase it looks like rain during the day.
Strap the screen down and get some good aviator sunglasses or goggles (for dusty off roading) put your foot down and enjoy!!
PS, I've had no trouble from plod running like this, I think the local ones must know me by now as the vehicle is fairly distinctive compared to the usual traffic (just a bit)
I'm not certain but I think as long as your vehicle details (insurance etc) comes up good on the PNC they are ok and dont bother.

Went a splashed out on a new battery, dam they aint cheap , added a gallon of diesel and checked oil etc etc, turned key and............... , second crank at she fired up sweet, smoked like a good un for 5 minutes then ran great , sounds spot on aswell, no knocks or anything, but for the exhaust rattling as it is sat on the rear axle, and a slight shake as the fan has a blade missing. So tomorrow i am strating on the front brakes to see whats what.
I am trying to work out what lift i need to do to get tje 33`s under, i was going to see about a SPOA but first i mite look at a 2" body and go from there.

Well i have JUST got some 33`s , and its the plan for the veggie kida . Spoa will be hard work and there is a bit of height to it so a body lift mite just do it...he says LOL.

Actualy stopped raining Neil so i went out and pulled of a wheel, big start hey , it has the twin damper set that some have added as an extra for heavy/off road use, the inner arck look sgood as i had a good poke around, just the patch behind the headlight thats all.
I need to decide now what lift to do to get some either 31`s or 33`s under it without to much cutting of the arch`s. The tyres on at the minute are 29" so all i need to get 33`s on is a 2" lift...i think, 3 or 4 would be better tyhough.

spring set up is more Jeep than landy swinging shackles at the front of spring
you may find 31 will go on without mods 33s will be limited to rims as you need offset to clear the springs or not a lot of steering
does it say pick up on log book that looks to have been a van cut down on the sides of yours it has chequer plate on the edges has it doesn't look like it's got any fittings for a canvas like factory ones
get it tested before you spend loads on it your main problem is going to be parts and postage the rides just like a series rattles your teeth off road
LOT OF VIDEOS ON YOU TUBE THIS ONE GIVES ALL MODELS
also a diagram of body parts if you screen grab it

Thanks for the info mate, it could well of been a van or people carrier type, i dont have the log book yet so i will find out as soon as i send or it.
As it now happens the chap i was going to buy the 33`s off has sold them to somebody else m but for me its not a bad thing as it will just kae the gearing worse etc and they were twice the cost of this other set i am after, these are 31`s and the same offset as what already on, if i went 33`s then i would of got Fatboys, but as you say i may not need to change much if i have 31`s.
I have found a few places for parts and i think i will be ok getting it sorted for the road. Have found a few things that can be adapted for the UMM from other cars to.
I have been thinking and the first idea was to gte this and get on the road to do light green lanes and have a demountable on it and to use it as a tow car for the next project, best of all worlds
Once on the road i will see what the ride is like, cant see it being any worse than my SJ with racsal springs, that was hard.
Most who own it say the ride is good on road though, on a straight that is as steering ismt all that good, but i have had some cars in my time and all i cant see it being all that bad, i am not after a cruising machine, just practical and fun

from looking at the spring shackle set up just get some made 2 inch longer and see how you go
you can always put the originals back on if it's no good make sure you make the shackles like the originals metal shop should be able to bend them up to a pattern +2 inch in length don't make them like SJ ones they need to be joined in the middle or you will make the steering bad as the springs will twist
have fun

MY ( early ) UMM project - now with Defender axles, 300Tdi and R380 gearbox...
http://4x4torque.forumco.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=33
The suspension is very much like Jeep CJ stuff... so easy to sort.
Do you have the narrow front / wide rear setup or the narrow / narrow setup??
Either way i can sort you with some springs and shocks.
Mine is a narrow / narrow setup and with a bit of cross referencing I have got a nice even 3" lift
Give me a cakll if you are struggling as I like UMM's
David

Well Dave since we last spoke well emailed i have got a set of 31`s on rims for a great price, should be here in a day or so, so as it wont need a lift for the 31`s i will not ned a lift yet.
I have been looking into making it a removable top for the summer cruises, it is doable and as soon as i get the pound flagged and the MOT perp done i will see about sorting that out before the camper body.
In the last few days besides messing with the roof i have looked over the rusty spots with my trusty poker, and as it is all it needs is 2 patchs behind head lights and the floor under driver seat and the out riggers of the floor. The exhaust needs new hangers as they have all snapped, what i will be doing is instead of a full length exhaust is shorten it to come out just infront of the rear drivers side wheel with one silencer.
The interior is ripped out to either renew the carpets or replace, they are a bit rotten in places so i think i will make some new ones from the old as templates.
I removed the callipers and managed to snap a bleed nipple , now i have a new set of callipers for £110 or a new seal kit for £24, i think i will try the seal kit first, these will be here shipped from Greece in a few week.
Now the brakes had me puzzled a little as when i removed the callipers the brake pedal wa still hard, not to the floor as it should, now i need to work out by removing the flexi hose to see if the hose has colapsed before i mess with the master cylinder, fingers crossed its the hoses.
Today i got on with the wheel bearings as the near side was very loose, i thought it had gone but once pulled apart i found that the bearing s are good and just the locking nut was not locked.
It has free wheel locking hubs fitted so first job was to find a good allen key to remove that, at job in itself, i have 3 sets of allen keys and not one had the correct size in it. I did manage in the end by digging i my old tool box, never where they should be hey.
Next the circlip, dam i hate these little things, i always end up pulling apart and getting a small flat nose scedriver behind to lever them off.
Then the end cap
The hub nuts were that loose i removed them by finger, but as said the bearings are good.
.
Now i have no 52mm box spanner util my mate pops over with one later so this can stay as is untill then.
I got on with the off side, now this wasnt as easy as one of the allen bolts on the locking hub had snapped a long time ago and water had managed to get it, this took some gettin g off so i got my bearing puller on the job.
A bit of a state but i got them cleaned up, bearings are ok`ish, a bit of muck on the hub which gives a not so smooth run but i carefully sanded it down and isnt so bad now.
The free wheel hub was very tight but i had a brain wave to help loosen with the help of a bit of leverage from my angle grinder spanner. i will add a wee bit of grease to them before i refit them.
Getting there slowly

It looks like a very functional design, makes up for the less than great driving in this vid.
