hay guys and gals
maby a question for some of you scots more than our overlanders here at differs but here it goes....
looking to plan a trip to scotland for some wild camping and fishing in the summer
my idea is to leave my home and head over to the coast roads and take a couple of days to drive up to scotland taking in the sights on the way, then once into scotland its self i want to head for loch rannoch and spend a few days around the loch fishing from shore, my canoe/kayak and just relax.
after a few days around the lake its over to the other coast for the drive home again.
so my questions are and this is the big one... is it still legal to wild camp in scotland, if so where can i gain access to the spots via 4x4 if i can at all as i would like to camp next to the car so all my gear has a safe place to stay and i dont have to lug it miles.
all my camping gear is fishing based so mostly dark greens and my car is matt black so should blend in well the only bright colour will be my kayak in fetching yellow
so any info any one can give would be a great help interesting places to stop and stuff also welcome
pete

Enjoy yourself.
This is not meant as negative, you will get away with lots, but it depends on time of year and exact location.
You can not legally just drive off the road to a Loch side.
It is someones land.
(unless at a place that does have public vehicular access.)
1 meter from the roadside is what some police see as OK because of the Public road, some Glens like Glen Lyon and you have land owners that call friendly (to them) police rather quickly if you take a vehicle way from your public road. by more than that 'Yard.'
People often do & often owners etc do not mind, does not mean it is your right if they challenge you.
There are places where it is still the done to ask permission.
Fishing for Brown Trout is just not a free for all either.
You might be where it is OK & free, but that is often away from the road.
A permit may only be £2 or £3 so check locally.
Same with launching Canoe/Kayak, OK going on un-navigable rivers almost everyplace, but you can not just take Loch side banks for granted anymore.
There is a very good 'Wild Camping' forum that is part of a Motorhome & Camping forum, that has great Info for almost every place with local people that post up to date info.
Access is limited untill you join, but still helpful.
Shows hidden stopping spots etc.
sorry cant put a link up just now.
Read the Scottish Right to roam & access codes.
(read the bit on vehicles, there are now rules/law regarding vehicles to allow access for disabled etc, otherwise its limited to Vehicular access or with Land Owners permission.)
I will post links if you need any when i am on a good connection.

george thats ace
my fishing will probably be for pike with spining gear as its very light to carry allday and use i fish a large local lake from my kayak for pike and its great fun
will look into the Scottish Right to roam and access codes for what ever info i can find
wonder if there is a way of contacting the land owners before the trip to ask if its ok and maby see if there is some sort of permit or such that they can issue me with stateing the detail of me and my car

PM me where you want to go.
(i can maybe direct you to the right person or pub.)
I would not ask in advance, adhock is more fun.
Weather dictates where you go, and the midge.
I stay/stop anyplace i want really, (out of the way, or very openly, depends)
but then i know my rights and i know where to be at certain time of the years, been doing it for 40 years.
& brought up with parents that were caravaners & wild campers.
Many many places i would never ever consider going to with a tent, but that i can stay at in a van.
That forum will be a big help.
There are loads and loads of good places to head that are really the wilds and free and hassle free..
Loch Rannoch is not ideal,
just my opinion/experience, i am often around the area for work reasons.
You get Pike in Forfar loch.
You can not just cast a spinner from a rod in lots of Scottish water.
You can not just say, "i am after Pike." lol NOT,
its serious in some areas and no problem what so ever in many other places.
*spotted trawling a line on some water and you are in big ****.*
catch you.

wild camping is now banned on the east side of loch lomand due to a local byelaw, be carefull of other places trying this one on. if you want to fish for brown trout, familurise yourself with "the brown trout "scotland" act, youll find it allows you to fish n a lot of places for free, just be prepared for some stroppy keepers and balifs that dont knowthe law!

There are places with Salmon fishing that have agreements for 'Free Brown Trout Permits' each day.
Say 6 available each morning..
Then they never are given out to the public that ask,
they go to the 'friend/partner' of their Paying guest out with the Ghillie so that they can pass the day or not with a rod in their hand.
Not really the short of places that you would want to be, to be having fun anyway.
& really applies to some of the rivers.
There is not so much 'freedom' around the Perthshire area for much of the year.
Loads of beautiful high Lochs around & even Arctic Char to be caught.
Braemar/Ballater, Gairnshiel to Corgarff (B976) A939 is my favourite easy to get to place for seeing unspoilt Scotland, and even if you tell other people you will never really spoil it,
there is space to get off the road with a tent and have solitude.
Which ever road you take to get there is wonderful.
A93 from Blairgowrie (Glenshee) or B974 From Edzell (Cairn o Mount).
(think i will make a sandwich now & i am oft for the day

For my money I would stay away from the main routes. Loch Rannoch/Gen Coe is lovely but the really wild and remote stuff starts well past Fort William. In fact, I more often head north of Kyle of Lochalsh and up towards Applecross and Sutherland. Amazing views and far fewer people.

Sounds like a great plan for a trip - I'd love to head north with no real plan but i don't think my truck would reach Derby
Maybe if i chucked my Yak in at King's Lynn......................

well whats tickled me about this trip is the fact that every one heads over seas tp see sights and travel BUT what about the things that are on home turf i have never been to scotland but its been a long time waiting and the time is right
looking for some where diffent from the info above it may be an area to drop in on and not stay at
just lookin at sattalite images of Loch Duntelchaig looks like it could be a nice spot not much in the way of buildings to be seen round the waters edge

just found bank side fishing only on Loch Duntelchaig bummer
but have found a little place tucked away called Lochindorb seems just as remote looking at the satalite images and there are good reports on the fishing and a few notes on wild camping there on google too so could be a spot to look into a little more and the turning point for my uk trip

(pete),
dude you are looking at tourist places, full of people looking to get away from it all in Scotland during the Summer.
You need to look at places that are actually 'away from it all if you want to get away from it all.',
Maps that show places with no houses/building and roads are because there are none.
This does not just mean that is a good place to go and set up camp.
Private estates and factors acting for Owners like it to be private.
You stand out like a sore thumb, & you are seldom welcome, as i said before everyplace belongs or is run by someone.
Loch Rannoch has stopping and camping right at the water side, but every gadgie from Perth knows that & its not always the best place to be at a weekend.
Midweek can be great lots of places, depends which mid weeks in the summer.
Kinloch Rannoch Hotel is about the dearest pint in Scotland and the Village pub is not much cheaper.
(Rannoch Moor is different from Loch Rannoch, only the 6 day trials ride across there.)
Rannoch station is nice, but the far end of a dead end.
Down the Tummel is wonderful, but the road is a busy place in summer.
Maybe look at Loch Tay, Loch Earn etc, but these are very developed areas now.
(you can still find a place with nobody to bother you, unless someone else with the same idea turns up)
Often there is a main road one side of Loch & campsites and loads of people & the smaller hardly used road on the other side with lots of secluded little stopping places.
I avoid Loch Ness in the Summertime, infact i avoid the one side of the Loch always, the other road is my choosen route.
You need to get to Fort Augustus first though.
Holiday drivers need all your attention and you can not enjoy the views.
This summer in Scotland will probably be crowded with people on Stayvacation.
Check out Torridon, Sheildaig, Kishorn, Applecross etc, but this is along way up Scotland from the border.
It get further and lots more fue from Fort William.
Once you are at Inverness then you are as well to go further North, this becomes rather expensive though.
Dumfries and Galloway, South Ayrshire, Argyle & Bute are all wonderful, but then so is the East Coast & the North East, Angus, Aberdeenshire, Moray etc.

Sounds good.
Where you want to stay on the Mainland will depend if you are getting a Ferry from the far North up near Thurso/John O Groat
to Orkney,
www.pentlandferries.co.uk/links.asp
www.orkneyferries.co.uk
Orkney single with car from April £47
www.northlink.ferries.org
Aberdeen Shetland weird and wonderful prices.
Big distance between Orkney & Shetland.

http://www.sea-fishing.org/ftopict-13428.html see here scooby is an orkney fishing boating ( i do like a bit of sea fish too)
its a little smaller than the 16ft cuddy me and my dad are fixing up for days on the water but free use... who can turn that down huh
i would imagine that i will get the ferry crossing from the northern end thanks for the link again its just a case of planing where to stay on the main land first to be honest its a little easy to sucked into the photos and stuff for some of the areas so if you have a good spot in mind away from the beaten track that suits all of the above it would save me some time
looking forward to the trip tho will be good to stretch the pajeros boots a little and get away from it all, could do with the trip now to be honest

I understand now, the boat is not at Orkney!
You will be heading to Aberdeen then.
Maybe Sea fishing and camping on the Angus /Aberdeenshire coast then before you go.
Carnoustie/East Haven, Arbroath/Auchmithie, Montrose/Usan, Inverbervie, Catterline, Stonehaven
great places on the way up.
Or Over Glenshee or Cairn o Mount on the way to Aberdeen via Deeside.

lochindorb has good bank side trout fishing, you cannot take your own boat out though
fished there many times over the years as live in the area
people camp there by loch, but often leave litter too....
avoid places like loch lomond, its mobbed and camping banned now in places becuase of litter and vandalism

Welcome to the Forum.
I hope you enjoy your trip.
Why not introduce yourself in the 'Garage' section, seems a little quiet in this bit.

just got back from northumberland/ dumfries area we stayed at keilder water one of the nights, the only regret was we didn't have any insect repellent, I can handle a few mozzies and flies but nothing prepared me for the midges!
The locals reccomend Avon "skin so soft" its meant to be really good.
