I think I get you and no Very Happy
Or you could, if you isolated the alternator doing the second battery. Say if you mounted it on nylon bushes, or engine mounts. But if you crash and the alternator touches any metal part on the truck it will be sparky-sparky Shocked
Easiest way to isolate the second 12V battery in the 24V is to fit an inverter and run an old fasioned transformer battery charger off it.
Or get a 240volt alternator Cool

But the quickest fix if your thinking of a second alternator is to go 'simple' and leave the landy alone. Then fit a 24volt alternator and 2 more batteries. Three batteries on-board could be three large ones, or one large and two small, that together take up one normal battery space.

I like this final option as there is nothing expensive or wierd about it Cool

and bear in mind that the two batteries providing the 24v need to be a matched pair

I would have thought the standard-ish landy alternator could have its regulator changed for a 24 volt one, but I can't see any evidence of it on the web. So i'll put that in the catagory of "a hunch worth asking a reconditioner" Very Happy

These guys seem to be setting themselves up for 4x4 regulators http://www.thetoolboxshop.com/0-812-25-electron...p-ring-2533-p.asp . Never heard of them, but it might be a good place to start?

No problem earthing the 24V alternator to the block, if there are now two batteries in the back, that are totally seperate from the landy 12 volt system. You can then share earths in the chassis/engine.
It would only go FLASH if the 12 volt and 24 volt met. Then the 24 volt batteries would attempt to charge the 12 volt one up to 24 volts. It wouldn't like that, and the rest of the landy electrics woudn't like it either Wink
