I'm trying to remove the drive shaft on a Haffy gearbox,I am removing them with the end casings as that seams to be the only way to get the shafts out. I've managed to remove the right hand shaft/arm off no bother. The left hand shaft/arm comes out so far then will not come out any more, I've tried taking the crown wheel off but I can't get that off either. I have taken the oil drain plug out also. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Firstly I should point out that I have never touched a haflinger in the flesh so what I say could be complete bo**ox.

On many vehicles with diff locks you need to engage them prior to half shaft removal from the diff to allow the diff lock dog to be engaged with the side gear of the diff or it can turn and catch on the splines like an old VW jack but a good wiggle usually gets things free. It also makes replacement of the shaft sooo much easier afterwards. It could also be some kind of pipe from the side casing to the difflock actuator or even that itself which isn't letting it move.

Sorry if that's of no help but we don't get a lot of visitors here with haflingers.
Good luck and keep us posted what it was for the next poor guy who tries the search function.

I've had a good look and you might be right, the only thing is the mechanism to operate the diff lock has been removed a long time ago. I have tried to push a punch in the hole where it should be but I just can't get it to do anything and the shaft still won't come out.

Problem solved, there was a seized sleeved part of the diff lock mechanism stuck in the casing.
