Hi all - no new questions for a while so here we go:-
Have an front axle oil leak from the seal inboard of the cv joint that is progressively getting worse. I assume the seal can be accessed once the hub, cv joint etc have been removed? Is there a bearing inside of the seal that may require changing?? Is there any tricks required??
Can the rear crank seal be replaced with the crank and sump in place on the M180 engine? If I was to just move the engine forward, remove the clutch and flywheel - what else would have to be done - drop the sump? Is the seal a lip seal or rope???
Finally, does the 404 gearbox take SAE90 oil
Thanks Will

Never use EP90 in a 404 as its additives eats the bushes and bearings. you need SAE 80/90 oil to GL4 standard ie without the additives. its readily available and no more expensive than EP90, just buy it in 5l drums not by the litre.
not sure about the rest as i've not had to do either but can you confirm the axle leak is on the axle tube or the input seal on the hub assembly?
pulling the engine forward to do the clutch release bearing took me 2 days and 3 tins of WD40 to get the exhaust Y pipe out. so start spraying now!!
do you have a copy of the workshop manual/ part manual?

If you go over to benzworld and look at my signature I'm hosting a full copy of the 404 manual. Feel free to download.

Sure is quiet on this forum, have all the mogs gone into hibernation??
Ref your axle oil leak, I replaced the seals on mine a year or so ago. The bearing is just a phosphor bronze type bush, mine had a bit of wear in them, but I took a gamble and decided to leave them and just changed the oil seals. Not leaking yet have fun.

Mogs into hibernation Mike? Not around here!! Mine just had an interesting outing getting the overhead power lines clearance guys to places they couldnt reach! - surprised them a bit.............and me!
How long did that front seal take then? Im avoiding one of mine, but it does show a bit after a lot of steep side slope work!

How long to change the seal, well in theory not too long, really depending on how seized all the bolts are
However it took me a couple of weeks of evenings work because I removed the whole front axle and diff to repair the diff lock and did lots of cleaning and painting at the same time.

Thanks for the information fellas - with the axle seals, I guess the best method is to strip it all down then check the play on the bush and order parts accordingly.
To JohnHughes -
1) the leak is from the axle tube
2)The exhaust system has been off the machine to replace a broken front exhaust manifold so have been through that struggle
When you moved the engine forward - I assume you made a bracket that fitted on the cam cover fixings so the engine can be lifted from inside the cab and through the bonnet as per the manual? I assume it would be possible to fit a bracket to the same fixings but retain the cam cover to eliminate debris from going into the engine? Any thoughts?

i thought that would work too but alas you need the rocker cover off to get clearance so it will pull forward and then up and over the axle.
i used heavy rope when doing the clutch release bearing but the engine was only suspended for 5 minutes. for a longer job make the proper tool and be safe
