Hi,

I mentioned this elsewhere, in passing, now bringing it to where it belongs.

I have just bought a 1996 Discovery, but not yet brought it home.

Apparrently the CD player doesn't work after a disc got stuck in it. The radio a tape player do work. I believe that the Discovery ICE is controlled by switches on the dashboard. It would be a shame to lose originality unless there is no other option. Should I consider that this radio/player is viably repairable, or affordably replaceable.

If I do have to peplace it with something new and modern, is there anyway that my wife can play her MP3 thingy without hacking holes in the dash panel?

Buy a cheap cd/mp3/tuner for about 60 quid and it will have a hole for her to plug it in.

Hi,

We now have my new Disco at home.

The CD player turns out to have a MAGAZINE to hold several discs, and this is hidden under the drivers seat, accessed thru a small "letterbox".

The Driver's handbook says to eject the "magazine" by pressing the EJECT button. I tried that, and "No answer!" was the stern reply. So what should be my next move?

Fronts seats are elecrically controlled for slide, lift, and tilt. I bet they are a fun job to remove, to access the magazine.

Hi Bertie,

Thanks for that. But I bet I finish up growing two more Adam's Apples. Very Happy

Does the ignition have to be turned on?

I put a new one in mine (cos it was a Jap re-import job and the Jap radio was not compatible with European systems) but I was really disappointed to find that I could not get one to play tape casettes.

Hi,

The PO told us that " a disc got jambed, wouldn't eject, and the CD player no longer worked". At least, I think that is what she told us, we were back in the house, and it wasn't a deal breaker. Car cost £1350, taxed and tested till middle of next year.

The radio works (with key turned). PO said the tape player still works, but we haven't tried. If I press the "mode" button, the little screen says ERROR.

On arriving home, Barbara looked at the radio dacia, said there wasn't a slot for a disc, so what was the PO on about, saying a disc was jambed? All was made clear when I read that the discs were stored in a magazine under the seat.

Its probably not worth paying for a professional repair, assuming I could find somebody to do it. The handbook says that extra magazines are available from Land Rover main dealer. Are they still? Subject to price, it may be worth seeing if a new magazine would solve the problem, but that means getting the old magazine out from where it is lurking. Probably best to bite the bullet, lash out on a new radio with MP3 facility, which seem to be available on Ebay and Amazon at not too much money ...... only five new tyres might take priority, they are a little thinner than I'd like them to be.

What size radio would I be looking for?

Clearing the CD changer from under the seat would give me a little more "lo-access" storage, something the Disco is short of.

You might be able to find a replacement 'multichanger' (the bit under the seat) on ebay from someone else upgrading. It may also be possible to buy a different one that'll work with the original headunit.

I'd expect somewhere on the multichanger there should be a manual eject button, you'll probably have to push it with a pin like the small hole on the front of computer CD drives. It's not unknown for CDs to come off the tray they sit on & jam multichangers up. Try looking inside the door as well as on the outer casing or googling for instructions if you don't have the manual for it.

602,

Try this:

Don't force it, use a bigger hammer, cos if it doesn't fit, the hammer is not big enough.

Seem familiar?

Hi Jojo,

I done a Ebay search for CD Multichanger, got 300 hits. So did a search for Land Rover Discovery CD Multichanger, got 8 hits, and everyone was for a complete car ..... probably the keyword appeared deeper into the advert.

So, back to original search, checked each one, found a Freelander multichanger for £20. Vendor said he was a breaker of late model Land Rovers. Hmmm! So maybe he would have a Disco unit too. Hmmm! £20? Worth it if it does the job, Waste of money if it doesn't.

I might try a few WANTED ads first, here and elsewhere.

Hi 602,

If it were me I would consider two options if my big hammer couldn't fix it: Forget the old one and just use the radio or buy a new unit. The latter with a single CD slot is far cheaper. I have just bought a complete set of Mozart works on CD for just under £20 (£19.99) fantastic value and about 4,000 miles worth of fantastic music on average Disco road speeds to hear the whole lot. What more could you ask. OK; Vivaldi, Beethoven, Brahms and so many more - the choice is fantastic.

Radio is good for the news though, but don't get one of those that gives traffic news as they only tell you where you have already been stuck for an hour or so and not where to avoid!

Hi,

According to my driver's handbook, my radio (badged Land Rover) has the facility not to receive traffic news. Sods Law says the day I switch it off .......

I have had a generous offer of a complete radio and multichanger, but it ain't badged Land Rover. So, is a multichanger is a multichanger is a multi changer, or are they manufacturer specific? If they are specific, does anybody know who made the Land Rover version?

The thought crossed my mind that what I really want, is to be able to unplug my multichanger, and plug the wire into a MP3 player. So I did a Google. All the answers were way over my head, but somebody was asking a similar question in 2001. Has there been any progress????

602 PS. Doh! Barbara found the switch for the electric sun-roof. I just looked out the window ..... and yes she has.

Hi,

Somebody offered me a radio and multichanger, including photo, but it was a Blaupunkt (sp?). I delayed replying, while I tried to find out how compatible would be a mix & match. I still don't know, but felt it would be courteous to reply ...... and I can't dind that mail. If you are reading this, please accept my thanks for your offer. Can you tell me where you are? We are heading for Milton Keynes in the near future.
