I have bought 2 brand new batteries and I am thinking about a split charge now what I need to know is if when I have a split charge fitted if I run a winch of my second battery when the engine is off will it also drain my 1st battery ?

I don't think it will inwould just like to confirm this , thanks

A decent split charge system will always protect your engine battery so that you can start the engine. Of course you can still run the engine battery flat in the usual ways - the sytem is not that idiot proof.

The winch should only use power from the winch battery. Have you got the right type of battery, a deep cycle type, for the winch?

Second battery for a winch? Sounds like a job for 'diode split charge' Very Happy
Neither can charge the other, as charge comes from the alternator.
It's not popular on here, but is the choice for marine use.
I'm pleased with mine Cool

I followed teamidris advice too, and am very pleased with the result. Have a diode pack on both trucks now.

if I was going to do it again I'd use a voltage sensitive relay (see the link below) to protect the starter battery.
