My 39 year old Land Rover Series 3 109" which I recently acquired is due an Oil and filter change.

I was told that I should use 20w 50 oil for the 2.25 petrol engine, Is this correct or could i use a different viscosity oil?.

I have some 5w30 oil for my other 21st century vehicle.

They said that if I used something as liquid as 5w 30 oil, it would run out through all the gaps in the seals etc..... Shocked

Looking for some cheap ( new ) engine oil.

Thanks

Buy it from the Difflock shop. They have oils specifically for Land Rovers and will advise you what oil you need.

Go to your 'local Motor Factors' and look at the oil.
There will be classic 20/50w etc. all sorts of fancy prices.

Then look at the likes of 'Comma' 20/50W @ £8-£10 for 5 litres,
there is your source of 'much cheapness', perfectly good engine oil for
an old engine.

One stop and you should get all the service items you may want,
Filters, oil, air, fuel, sump plug washer, oils & greases for hubs,cv's, axles ,transfer & gearbox, antifreeze, brake fluid, pads & shoes, hoses etc etc.

Did you look in Tesco/Asda/Lidl/Sainsbury stores not petrol stations? also a 'Much cheapness' supplier of 20/50W engine oil.

same as above,

5w 30... the first number is the viscosity so the 5 is quite a lot more runyier then a 20w.

the second number is to do with heat range.

20W/50 is lurvuly in an old worn sloppy engine for a bit of compression,
dont always want runyier IMO.
