As long as your current batter has a high enough current output (should be printed on the battery label as CCA, Cold Cranking Amps) then you don't actually need to do anything to the current set up for the winch to work. However depending on how you use the winch, you will may well want to increase the battery capacity (bigger or multiple batteries) so you can winch for longer without stopping to recharge or fit a bigger alternator so that the battery(s) recharge quicker.

Having two separate batteries so that only one is used on the winch and the other remains charged for starting the engine is a good idea, but not essential and manual split charge systems are a pain to keep switching every time you start and stop winching. An automatic split charge system is more practical if you do want separate batteries.

If its just for occasional recovery on pay and plays and pulling yourself up the odd small hill, then I would try it with one battery to start with and carry a pair of jump leads anyway and see how you get on.

depinding on the size of the winch as the bigger you got the more amp you need as i started off on 1 battery set uo then found that as soon put the load on the battery the alternator would struggle to up,load the charge going out and kepted stall the engine so i went scrappy got a big alternator vitra 16v 70 amps and got a spilt charge x -eng 180amp for around 40 quid and two bigger battery matching now running 3 winch on my sj , just up grade the alternator to 105 amp off a corsa for 8274 as fab mod now running and pulled in lot faster
