I'm a bit stuck and need to know which direction to go with this.

On the way home from mothers and a few days of messing around with my Bro's disco mine has started to make a funny knocking noise when slowing down.

My question is where should I start and what should I check? Drive shafts, CV joint, Transfer box, is there a logical way to do this.

Any help would be great and a logical order to start in would be great.
Ow it is a 94 200Tdi.

Thank you

im sure some one will give more details but as far as i can help,,
i would guess, if it was on the drive part of the car it would knock when accelerating and changing gear...there is a common problem on the gearbox output shaft to transfer box where the splines wear and you get a knock when changing gear etc...

if its only when slowing down check brakes or handbrake...if the handbrake is adjusted to much it could give a judder or knock sensatiuon when slowing down

the prop shafts have grease nipples on so you could try a bit of grease and see if that cures it as an easy fix

is it only when cornering or going straight??and is it only when slowing down??

Thanks for the reply.

It seems to happen when slowing down foot on and off the break and you can also hear it when going round corners.

Its not the hand brake as I have sorted that out a few weeks ago.

A mate said to put it in diff lock and jack a wheel up and see if you get any movment in the wheel. Is this a good thing to start doing.

Sounds like it could be a diff.

They way I would start, would be to remove front prop shaft, check it for wear, and whilst it is off test drive vehicle whith diff lock. Then repeat with rear.

This way you are at least learning if it is front/rear/permanent (one of the boxes)

Hope for you it is just a uj on the prop

Andy

I may be worth spending five minuets greasing the UJs and the propshaft sliding joints before you do anything more complicated. If it is the UJs and props the grease will stop or lessen the knock - but only for a dozen miles or so, but at least it will indicate where the problem lies.

Could it be due to some low life trying to nick your wheels? It's worth fitting some locking wheel nuts. And while you are at it smear a little copper grease on the threads and tighten up with a torque wrench.

J

PS while you are at it grease the UJs and prop shaft - it makes for smoother running especially if you regularly off road.

Need to figure out how to post some pic's as well.

Thanks for all the info.

Hi,

Im not in any clubs, been there done that, the politics got too much for me!

used to get up to a site who will be nameless in wales (lots of bad feelings from various peeps)

Usualy at the mo end up at avon dasset when i can afford it, tho want to go to mintey etc when i can meet up with a partner in crime that isnt working!

I used to do lots of laning in wales, but again money is tight, although i now have memory map in the 110 with 90% of lanes in mid/ south wales marked.

Im all up for a road trip if you fancy one, just depends on funds! (self employed and not much on!)

Don
