After I have taken the head off a 300tdi the first head bolt on the left has oil coming out of the short block when I insert a bolt into it, is it possible for oil to be coming up?

Its a second hand engine and the cylinder head exhaust ports where badly tarred up, not carbon but thick black gunk around 3-4mm thick, I scraped it all out and then soaked head overnight to clean it. (thats how I got to then discover oil coming out of the short block bolt hole).

So it looks to me as its been burning oil, I hope this is from a failed head gasket and not passing up from somewhere else, for a certainty the head gasket looks fairly new, its in too good nick to be an old one, so I am hoping the oil has by-passed the gasket and that caused the gunk. (I think guy knew it was burning oil and thats why he sold it on a well known auction site). What I think is he badly fitted the head gasket, run the engine for awhile, burning oil then decided to offload the engine on to some poor mug like me!

The question is if its impossible for oil to come up from the bolt hole in question then its logical for the oil to get there by by-passing the head gasket?

is that possible?

no oil should not be coming up the bolt hole it's more like when you was removing the head oil got into the holes you should clean out the bolt holes before re fitting or you can crack the block bit of rag round a thin screwdriver push into holes twist round the remove also make sure the head bolts screw all the way in and out ok Wink Wink

Clogged inlet manifold could be due to the exhaust gas recirculation system - they do this. Its supposed to keep our environment clean - but do some research as the engine may run without it.
