|
|
|
Hello everyone,
Just got a replacement for my old volvo 940 family ferry - a jeep commander.
Its standard goodyear wranglers are getting a bit low so I'm thinking to upgrade to a mild all terrain in the 245/70r17 size (stock is the 245/65r17).
What do people recommend? Cooper ATR? General HTS? Toyo open country a/t? Nexen Roadian AT2? or even the new general AT?
Dont like the goodyears, they seem to pick up way too much grit plus I'd like something a bit better off road. The majority of driving will be country roads and the off roading will be light green laning.
My driving style is relaxed (i get my fix of fast response driving at work) but I do need good wet road handling.
I only really know mud terrains and have never had a 4x4 that's newer than 1982 so my knowledge is shoddy at best!
Please point me in the right direction
Cheers
Pete.

Pete,i would put the new General AT at the top of the list followed by the Cooper and then the other ones in no particular order.Continental do an AT as well these days with nice traction type edges on them as well so give them a look as well.

Thanks guys, I think the BFGs are a bit too 'extreme' for my needs, I'm gonna go with the general at's they look more road friendly! - I dont suppose anyone has an idea of milage expectations for them?
Cheers
Pete

Sorry to hijack this thread but my father in law is considering changing the tyres on his Commander too.
He's found that the tyres he wants (I think Grabber AT2s) aren't available in exactly the standard size (let's say 65 profile instead of 70) and we're not sure of the insurance implications of fitting tyres that aren't standard.
Do different size tyres (even by 5%) or things like non standard tread patterns count as modifcations? Is it OK to have AT tyres of the right size but a different make to factory spec or is an insurance company likely to try to not pay up even then?? I hope that's unlikely (as do probably most of the country).
I know we can ask his insurance company but he's on holiday and I found this thread so thought I'd ask.

Maybe a suitable tyre will come up on here.
www.4site4x4.co.uk
see 'tyre selector'
215/55/R18
215/60R17
215/65R17 are what shows there.

Nobody can say what an Insurance Broker/underwriter thinks,
they dont know.
(get their verbals in writing, you know they lie when their lips move)
You need to ask, because some Discount providers allow no deviation & others just like you to Declare.
If it is on a 4x4 offroad or even a '4x4 onroad policy' hopefully they allow the use of decent tyres.

gonna chip in with my bit, going on what you say about wet weather performance being important my personal preference is the cooper atr especialy coming upto winter i believe this is probably a better option due to the volume of sipes built into the design.
the nexen is a nice quality tyre built in korea much like kumho, hankook or maxxix and the nexen at2 pattern again is not too aggresive but will provide a good solid performance, the general is a good quality tyre and well established with it's own following, all above mentioned patterns represent a sensible choice i don't think you'd go far wrong with any of them.
hope that makes sense
