Hi, I am in the process of removing the rear axle of my 404 in order to repair the difflock. Can someone explain the set up with the torque tube / prop shaft. I have currently undone only the ring of bolts between the torque tube and the axle nose but am unable to pull the axle away (it has moved approx 3/4 inch). Should I be undoing something at the gearbox end - does the prop shaft come away with the axle???? Please help.

Will

hi will
the prop has a universal joint at the gearbox end and a sliding spline at the other now if your trying to wheel the axle out then you will stuggle because the gearbox has no diff in side as you pull the axle back its trying to rotate the prop the only way ive done it is to have the wheels off the ground(i used a engine crane)and picked the axle up and pulled the lift back(i take you have undun the brakes/locker/coils/dampers/panhard)
and when you strip the diff out (you do know how to remove it)its a pig to do if your not shure drop me a pm and il talk you through it

Axle removed - do not have to remove anything from gearbox end. Male splines on input to diff housing pulled out of the female splines on propshaft. Pulled the axle away from the torque tube on a little trolley.

Found the diff actuator fork has and broken finger at the lever end.

Has anyone a spare actuator fork for sale please??

Thanks for the advice Minimog

if your getting it from manfred you might have to change the complete lot (collor/fork shoes) because last one i did it was diferent also to save you alot of hassel if the new castle collor is a tight fit on the shaft file it a little to make it a smooth sliding fit (dont ask how i know)
