Just in the 'consideration' stage of a 303 at the mo.

Couple of simple Qs but ones ive yet to find the answer to. What is the average sort of realistic mpg of a 303 ? Is 20 unrealistic on a long run ?

I dont profess to know much about Volvo engines TBH but isnt the B30 a 'red block' ? If so has anyone done a B23/B25 swap with injection. im sure there is a 5 pot injected block thats non turbo so should slot in. Betterer torque figures/curve.

Any ideas/advice/abuse gratefully received!

Laughing

and i thought i had got away with it!! *ssshhhh*

Nothing exciting to add other than i finished my sentance in Wales and now live in Devon and had a 4 week excursion last year to Russian border and back thr scandinavia. Also flew to Estonia earlier in 2010 and bought a rather sexy 4x4 20 miles from the russian border and drover it home, just for the hell of it!!

I now have extended family in Baltics/Scandinavia so getting my hands on a 303 is really easy (and fairly inexpensive) and my brothers father in law is a mechanic so can check stuff out for me.

Hi.

I will try to answer you.

It´s about 11,75 mils per gallon! if it´s a 6x6

The B30 is a red block and i have not done the swap, but i think it will work with the B23/B230.

The 5 cyl. is what we call "white block" and i think it`s to large to fits in.
You could if you want!

A better choise is to use a diesel engine from MB or Volvos D24.

Regards.
Mattias

I'd be very reluctant to put a smaller engine in despite what numbers on paper might say. The B30 has enough power to get the thing moving but there's only just enough torque at very low RPM's where a smaller injected engine would simply stall with it's lighter flywheel.
I'd try one standard before getting one with the intention of messing with it.
The high fuel consumption is due to low gears and aerodynamics like a brick.
20 would be pushing it on a run for sure, well 20l/100Km's would be about right but not mpg.
Don't get one if you can't afford the fuel because they are thirsty and any other engine isn't really going to change that.

That said, I'm looking at a GM V8 diesel for mine. Very Happy

You're only interested in the C303? the 6x6 don't take your fancy? Better ride and more stable and I think are pretty handy off road.

Im just looking for one that wil get used maybe twice a year on my jollies- 6 weeks over summer to where ever i end up and 2 weeks a xmas. Probably be parked up for majority of remaining time except the odd jolly when im feeling fruity.
White block engines ? you reckon a T5 lump from an 850 will fit? Laughing

Have read about fitting the Merc engines , the Normally Asthmatic one dosnt appear to be much better than the petrol one fitted 'on paper'. Is it not possible to fit a 303 flywheel to a B25 etc ? As previous torque curve does look better (although has been mentioned- paper isnt the be all and end all - have fitted diesels that on paper had better peformance thea the engine being fitted but the torque was pants)

Your six week jollies will be taken up the first year doing your conversion, the second, third and fourth year jollies will be made up paying for the fuel that you could have used but spent on a conversion.
The standard set up really isn't that bad and will out everything any 4x4 of a similar vintage and embarrass a lot more modern stuff too.
Get one, get out and enjoy your holidays!!

If you don't need the extreme off highway capability then a Toyota Hiace 4x4 probably makes the most sense as a touring, camper traveling vehicle out of anything available. They're the transport of developing countries around the world and can get more places than even a rental car. Parts can be got anywhere and they are very tough and underrated vehicles.

Toyota Hiace? Shocked wash your mouth out Laughing I suppose i could always mount a Dushka in the back and have the first Technical with full length sun roof! The other vehicle of the developing world being big old merc diesels and T55s Wink Dont travel further East than Russian border or further south/east than greece due to having 3 small kids so wanting to stay in EU for the medical side and also i can thow them all on a plane home in less than 24hrs if things went wrong.(we avoid france/spain like the plague!) Europe is soooo big and soooo much to see its not worth considering going further afield anyway as there is so much more to see. Further afield will have to wait a few years i think.

first year on a conversion ? Im doing it , not British Rail worshops.

I do think talking about money in public is slightly vulgar but fuel dosnt bother me too much, as long as its better than single figures i'll be happy, closer to 20 would be nicer for nothing other than having to stop too much on a long schlep Very Happy

Been looking at few recently in Scandanavia, saw one today with a 300tdi and autobox in today, looked like a good install. Just need to get me **** in gear and start making choices Smile
