Might seem terribly obvious, but would it not be easier to buy a later diesel trooper, if you want that engine?

The mk1 did come with a 2.8 turbo engine. So it wont be impossible.

Should be a direct swap. You might want to have a look at the 2.8 frontera engine with the trooper 2.8 flywheel (Frontera is a dual mass and wont fit without the gearbox spacer and a lot of fiddling). About an extra 20 bhp as standard, whilst keeping the economy.

Have a look at the axles, if you have the 8 bolt front and the 10 bolt rear with an LSD in the back end, you've the rare as rare set up on the early mk1's. The 10 bolt LSD will go in the 10 bolt front diff on later mk1 troopers and the 12bolt LSD is as common as muck - gives you an LSD at both ends.
