Hi fellas.

Just rebuilt the carb on my 404 and got her running really sweet and the starter appears to have packed up. Not sure if it's the whole unit or the solenoid. Anyone know how to test and where I can get a replacement for either? Everything else is good, new brakes and as I say a carb that finally works properly and now this!!

All help appreciated.

Cheers

Mark

Take the starter off and run -ve to the housing and +ve to the smaller contact on the soliiod, you should hear it click across.

Then take the +ve and take it to the main terminal on the starter itself, you might want to have a foot on it Wink if the starter spins all good.

Then take a large +ve to the input terminal on the soliniod and a second wire to the smaller terminal ,see if the soliniod shoots over and the starter spins.

If not, take apart, clean ,fit new brushes and the chances are all will be good.

Also having it rebuilt will only cost about £50 from your local starter re conditioners in the yellow pages.

If the starter works fine above, make sure that the wire from the back of the starter button to the smaller terminal on the starter motor is in good condition.

Hi.

Thanks for that. When you mention positive/negative do I just clip a wire to the battery terminal and then touch the fittings as you mention? Never been too good with electric tbh!! It was working fine and then just stopped working, no steady deterioration just worked then didn't work. I will attempt what you describe and see how I get on.

Thanks again.
