Picked up a Fourtrak a few weeks back as my first 4x4 so looking forward to getting offroad, doing some mods and meeting a few people on here.
It was initially bought to keep the car clean when going to the stables and to tow a horse trailer but I just can't help thinking I need to get it modified a little and get it down some green lanes and eventually on a Pay & Play site!
I have named it Daihard which may not be original but works for me.
When I went to view it I was impressed by the condition inside and out. It has been well looked after as far as I can tell. Recent re-spray, very little rust anywhere and the underside has all been under sealed.
A few pics of it as I got it:
Cheers,
Tark.

It was much cleaner than the Lawn Rover I also went to view that was held together with rust and mud!
I just hope mine isn't totally rusty hiding under the underseal although it has had new box section sills and suspension mounts welded in just last year.
It must be nearly run in now at 96,000 Miles. lol
I have no idea about the tow bar as I haven't seen another one to compare it to. Pulled about 1500 kg with it last week and it never ripped the back end off so thats a good start! Pulled it like like there was just a slight head wind.

Looks well tidy mate! Nice one.
Are there any plans for vehicle mods? Or will it stay like it is?
PS. The green colour is nice.

I have been trying to register on here for a week but never been able to and kept getting a debug error when registering. I tired on a different PC this morning using Firefox instead of IE and Bobs your Uncle!
I registered on some other forums too including northwest4x4 & 4x4uk.org as well as Daihatsu-drivers
Modification plans for Daihard are as follows:
Fix fog light and the voltage gauge on dash.
Full Service including Engine oil and filter, fuel filter, air filter, change oil in gearbox, diffs and transfer box, grease all linkages, flush water system etc etc.
Fit boost gauge
Tweek fuel pump
Manual boost control valve
New AT tyres either 255/70/15 or 31x10.5x15
Maybe even new Steel wheels for a road set & offroad set
2" Lift springs
2" Pro Comp Shocks
Extended braided brake lines
Gearbox cross member plate
Diff guards
Poly bushes
Roof light bar & 4 rectangular spots
Snorkel
Side bash guards
Winch bumper & winch
All of these are just ideas and my never get past that stage but I will just see how it goes. You never know I may not even like offroading!
I have googled all sorts of tyres and came to a list of the following options that I think might be suitable:
Kumho AT KL78
Kumho MT KL71
Cooper Discoverer ST
Cooper Discoverer AST II
General Grabber AT2
BF Goodrich AT KO
BF Goodrich MT KO
But if I am going for a set of wheels just for offroad then I will go for the more offroad biased tyres. If I just stick to one set of wheels I don't want anything too unstable at the back end for road use as I will be sometimes towing up to 2000kg with a horse trailer and 2 horses!
Without any previous experience I can only go by what others say about them and the price. Its difficult though as some people rave about the Goodrich AT tyres saying they are great offroad and onroad plus last for over 100,000 miles but then others day they are crap.

I've just fitted some Cooper Discoverer MT's on my Indy and they are very good, not too noisy on road and plenty of grip, even in the wet. And off road they are as good as they look!
Cost me about £110 each I think, that was fitted and balanced as well.

yer you cant go wrong with bf, however 100,000 miles?? Nah!! more like 30-50k if your lucky, but by then there pointless off the road cos they will be slick, they are good tyres though.

Welcome. Looks clean. I've got bfg at's, I spoke to some one other week who's got em on a landy n they have done 70k and still have plenty of tread on them. For most of your mods the best place is bloodredoffroad.com. He does just about anything for fourtraks n it's top notch gear aswell. His website needs updating (hint hint dave if you're Reading) but he's that busy with work he dunt get chance to do it. My bros towed a ton trailer with a jeep cherrokee on it. We knew it was there but towed it very well, we got home to find that the rear strap had come off so it was only held on with 1 strap going through the doors and the hand winch at the front

if you want to fit some bigger tyres for offroading i know where you can get 33" maxxis bighorns for under £100 a piece brand new. they would be good for your offroading and keep the smaller tyres for towing. they also have the bighorns in 35" but you would need alot of arch work to make them fit. you should be fine towing with ATs on. farmers often pull 5 ton with these machines and i believe theres a picture on here of a trak towing an arctic lorry during all the snow we had. a horse box and a couple of horses should be no problem. one suggestion i would make is have a better clutch fitted. i reckon mines been used a couple of times for towing heavy trailers by the last owner and my clutch is abit iffy now. kris on here has also had the same problem
P.S welcome to the forum

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.
I have been in contact with Dave from redbloodoffroad and asked for a price for all the bits I am after that aren't on his website. At the moment I am away working offshore so things are just in the planning stage until I get home next week. Then the first job is to carry out the full service and make sure the thing is worth of spending any more money on! lol
I am going for semi-synthetic engine oil as I am guessing that with this engine the internal clearances won't be tight enough to benefit from the thinner oil film thickness of fully synthetic. I couldn't find in the service manual what weight to use but was thinking standard 10W-40 would do the trick? I will just pop down to the local motor factor but something like this:
http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b...9p57108&rs=gb
Does anyone rate these oil drain plugs sold on here?
http://shop.difflock.com/daihatsu-drainplug-p-179.html
I had an e-mail yesterday with a 40% off offer. I thought it might be worth it if I am going to be pulling trailers and going offroad and changing the oil frequently. Then again I am betting I will change it no more than every six months considering the quality of modern day oils.
Can anyone suggest a good quality & good priced gear oil that I can use in both the gearbox, diffs and transfer box? The gearbox needs GL-5 grade but the diffs and transfer box can have GL-3 but seeing as GL-5 is a better grade I thought I could just put that in them all?
Something like the 80W-90 they sell on here:
http://shop.difflock.com/classic-gear-80w90-litres-p-54.html
Thanks for the photo Parrot and link parrot. I will do my best to repair the existing fog light but running in a new cable shouldn't be a problem if I need to. The history of the fog light is that I am not getting voltage to it. The lamp is fine, the fuses are all fine and the fog light switch works, lights up and has current through it. I heard it could be to do with the trailer wiring so I will look into that too.
I do like the look and reviews on the MT KL71. I will really want 5 of them and 5 wheels which all adds up but must be the most important thing to do first if going offroad. lol I really don't want to start cutting arches so think I will stick with no larger than 30x10.5x15 which I hear will fit with no modifications other than maybe moving the bumper 5mm or so and removing the mud flaps. Will it still require mods with 2" lift springs and shocks?
Sorry for all the links and questions. I promise more photos and descriptions when I eventually get home and can tinker!

Someone said that the trailer circuit has a function that cuts out the fog light live when the trailer is plugged in to stop fog light glare off the trailer. There might be a fault with the trailer socket so I will have a look into that. I'm an electrical engineer so if I can't sort out a 12v light and switch there is something wrong! lol
No Kumho's of the right size on eBay at the moment and I will contact Tyres Direct this afternoon but my first thoughts is that their wheels are already £10 more than at 4x4tyres.com and the tyres £20 more each than camskill.co.uk. I don't really want a package anyway as the new wheels will have the road tyres on and want the new tyres on my old wheels.

I'm an electrical engineer by trade but it took me 2 hours in the rain to figure out why my brake lights weren't working. Should of checked the fuse first lol.
My rear fog wouldn't work but there was power through the switch. Me n dave took wires from tow bar electrics, well I held the light while dave did the wiring

I hope you mean a disco as in flashing lights, loud noises and a smoke machine.... Mind you, that could mean any type of disco wether it be a rave or a lr discovery broken down on the hard shoulder (I'm waiting for the over toutchy people to comment). Graham don't get a disco, for the price of what they cost you can get a far better fourtrak. If you've got £3000 I might be able to sort you out with Diego (look in my eleanor thread). If not you can still get a decent one. Look at what dave bought off me for £700, it had got £500 worth of suspension on it. I bit of welding n he sold it for £1500. I do know where there's an f reg landcruiser for under a grand. They are awesome offroad apparantly. I asked dave if he might be interested with a little joke about him cutting it up n he never got back to me.

I had a look at a disco before I got the Fourtrak and it made me like the Fourtrak even more. Not only was the Disco £400 more expensive but the arches were no longer attached to the chassis (dissimilar metal clips never seem a good idea) Bumber clips had corroded away, the rear doors were all rusty above the arches and needed patching up, the upper window at the back had a hole rusted away, the switches and electrics didn't seem to work and the hi/low gearbox selector was seized solid!
A few hours later I went to see the Fourtrak and bought it there an then! Retro! And I was very happy with the price at only £1000.
I will see about getting those tyres from Camskill today then if that's the case! I better order the 2" lift springs and shocks too so they fit!

Whilst I was in spending mode yesterday I also ordered one of the drain plugs from here and a hose seeing as they are on 40% off. And I got a Difflock sticker too!
Todays order will have to be for a new set of wheels for my new tyres.
And the best of it is that after treating it to all these new goodies it only had the cheek to not start the other day! The wife reported that it just clicked and the engine wouldn't tunr over so sounds like a sticking starter solenoid or something as it bumped ok and has started on the key ever since. I best get it off, stripped & cleaned as part of my service next week.
